Tell me why I am wrong, and my detractors are right. (Conscription)
Edited on Mon Mar-08-04 11:19 PM by theorist
I stated early this morning that if I was drafted, I would feel obligated to comply due to my tacit agreement (a la Socrates) resulting from my will to remain a citizen of this country and take advantage of the system.

I've been thinking about it, and I'm in a state of vulnerable open-mindedness about the whole issue. I know full well that the current American leadership is in the wrong, but I need you to convince me that this trumps my obligation.

3. You missed my point

It's your choice. It's neither right nor wrong. It's merely your choice. Why defend such a personal decision to anyone?

4. Are you sure it has to be on their terms?
I mean, they provided a bunch of resources and you took some based on what you wanted. Now that you feel obliged to give something back, does it have to be necessarily anything they ask?

Could you fulfill your 'obligation' by serving your country in some other (less killing the enemy) sort of way?

Do you get a rebate on your obligation due to taxes you have paid, or will pay? (this is a serious question, although I admit it sounds funny)

5. you can best serve your country by helping to put it right . . .
My country, right or wrong.
When it's right, keep it right.
When it's wrong, set it right.

6. Check out Thoreau's classic essay On Civil Disobedience

The true patriot serves his country with both his mind and his conscience as well as his body. One who serves with his body only while ignoring his mind and his conscience is no better than a mechanical robot and could well be be replaced by one.

on edit: link & direct quote:

http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Literature/Thoreau/CivilDisobedience.html

The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. They are the standing army, and the militia, jailers, constables, posse comitatus, etc. In most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the judgement or of the moral sense; but they put themselves on a level with wood and earth and stones; and wooden men can perhaps be manufactured that will serve the purpose as well. Such command no more respect than men of straw or a lump of dirt. They have the same sort of worth only as horses and dogs. Yet such as these even are commonly esteemed good citizens. Others--as most legislators, politicians, lawyers, ministers, and office-holders--serve the state chiefly with their heads; and, as they rarely make any moral distinctions, they are as likely to serve the devil, without intending it, as God. A very few--as heroes, patriots, martyrs, reformers in the great sense, and men--serve the state with their consciences also, and so necessarily resist it for the most part; and they are commonly treated as enemies by it. A wise man will only be useful as a man, and will not submit to be "clay," and "stop a hole to keep the wind away," but leave that office to his dust at least:
