If FDR had moved at the same speed at the beginning of WWII
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 10:49 AM by The Lone Liberal
As Bush is moving on homeland security today, the Japanese would have been in Salt Lake City.

We are now approaching the two years anniversary of 9/11. While it took FDR a year to marshal the forces needed to get this country on a war footing by the end of the second year the United States had taken the offensive and:
had crippled the Japanese fleet at Truk,
had driven the Nazis army out of North Africa,
had defeated the Japanese at Tarawa
and invade Sicily and Italy
Mussolini had been disposed and killed.

Compare that to Bush’s record.
We are still fighting in Afghanistan
We are still fighting in Iraq
Bin Laden is still at large
Saddam Hussein is still at large.

Bush a great war time leader?

Edit: Oh yes, I forgot FDR during that time had consolidated the support and was working in concert with the whole free world to defeat our enemy. Bush on the other hand has pissed off nearly everyone and is reduced to buying support.

1. Wow, great contrast
But you forget, U.S. oil companies now have access to that sweet Iraqi crude. That right there is way more important to *'s contributors than the 3000 lives snuffed out on 9/11.

2. Please remember, when World War II started
we had nothing to fight with. We didn't have this vast military industrial complex turning out huge amounts of weaponry just to keep their factories going.

It took time to retool our industries. Of course, we had industries back then. Tool and dye. Steel. Republican administrations shipped those dirty things overseas. We try to fight a World War now and we'll be stopped dead when we can't import vital parts for our equipment.

But hey, we're okay as long as we attack countries that aren't armed, like Iraq, right?

3. Actually we had been getting ready since 1940 at the latest
Conscription was started. Plans for increased weapon production had already started and we were already supplying the UK with the material under lend lease.

5. Yes, but (always a but)

The American Pacific fleet was on the bottom at Pearl Harbor
FDR was faced with two large well-trained and well-equipped armies
US soldiers were still using wooden rifles for training.

9. But there are other factors too
None of the Carriers were at Pearl Harbor, and they turned out to be the most important type of ship in the war. Only like two ships were permanently lost on dec. 7th. Development of the aircraft and aircraft carriers that would win the war was already underway. One of the well equipped armies, the Germans, already had the Russians to deal with. So to paint the picture as America having to stop two powerful countries alone is innaccurate.

4. The comparison is ludicrous
and shows what a disgrace this unelected drunk is...

""Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 - a date which will live in
infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and
deliberately attacked by an unnamed foreign power who cannot be mentioned due to national security. British intelligence says we have reached our rendezvous with destiny. I ask that the Congress declare war on Bolivia. And in a month I will dress up like a pilot, pretend to fly onto an aricraft carrier, and declare the Second World War over."

6. FDR's accomplishments were against an enemy that could fight back
as well. The Japanese fought back fuiously everywhere we went on the offensive. They had an air force. Bush cherry-picks opponents for the profit of his family and friends and all their defense-related business holdings.

Don't forget in the Us Senate during the war Senator Harry S. Truman actually led a Senate committe that investigated war profiteering as well. The Dems were in the majority and they investigated.

You will never see the Republicans do that.

7. I didn't know FDR said that?
Wow --- he is just an average Joe and an all-around good guy. With the war over I guess we can get back to spending at Walmart.

Question: I don’t understand though of if the war is over, why are there still people goose-stepping down the streets of Paris?

10. We are not at War
The attack on Pearl Harbor wasn't a couple dozen guys armed with credit cards and box cutters.

If your post is intended to show how badly Captain Segway is doing with his phony "War", then I agree. But don't show disrespect for the men and women who fought and died in WWII with this freakshow we have going on today. Anyone who tries to draw a comparison between this 100% politically motivated photo op "war" and WWII is seriously f**ked up.

11. yeah, that's true
Instead of focusing on poor running of the war we should focus on poor justification of the war and lack of achievable goals

12. I disagree --- A comparison is indeed needed.
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 11:26 AM by The Lone Liberal
The false image that the people of the US are now laboring under needs to stand under a bright light of comparison. To portray Bush as a Great War time leader as has been done on numerous occasions needs to be dispelled by comparing his conduct and accomplishments to that of another "REAL" wartime leader.

The comparison is not about the men-at-arms. The courage of someone in motal danger during a battle is the same. The ability to act as the country’s leader in times of stress is not. The comparison is between FDR and Bush. Not between the armed forces of WWII and those currently being used to engage in the Mid-east.

On Edit: We are never going to be able to sway the population on the need for this war,so let us take the battle to Bush on what he has accomplished. Bush and Company did a good job on misleading the people on the need for a war. Bush cannot stand up under the comparison of what he has accomplished since 9/11.

15. But, the comparison itself
Is part of the Segway Administration's propaganda machine. You lend credibility to actions that were totally unproductive and VERY expensive when you suggest that Captain Segway is a "war time" President.

I will agree that it is about the lack of leadership shown by this moron that play acts as President, no argument there. Instead of going after the two countries that have provided the most support for Terrorism, we go after two "politically safe" targets.

We are not at War. There is no War going on. If you want to make the case that Bush and Company are doing a poor job with their "war", then make the case strictly on the results of their actions. We should not "aid and assist" the enemy (the repukes) by even suggesting that we are at "war".

16. To deny that the country as a whole feels we are at war
Is to operate in under a false reality. I do not intend to legitimize the actions of GW and cronies, but I am not going to hide from the fact that a majority of Americans do believe we are at war. To argue against that fact is to waste the advantage of comparing accomplishments between Bush and other wartime presidents. He fails and it cannot be denied.

We can no longer afford to cry out against gravity. We need to attack where there is vulnerability. And, IMHO that is Bush's accomplishments. Politics is the game and if we do not win then everyone loses.
