I'm studying voter rights legislation in this country
and would love to discuss this with others.

In the general election of 2000, I saw signs in poor, minority neighborhoods of my suburb (of Dallas) urging people to vote, but to make sure they had no outstanding warrants, fines, or back rent due. I was appalled. I now wish I had taken one as evidence. My students saw them, too. My county is under investigation by the Justice Department for voting irregularities.

I have talked to adults who think you have to speak English to vote, who think you cannot have library fines, who think you have to have your voter registration CARD, who think that if you didn't vote in the primary you cannot vote in the general election, etc.

It is a crying shame.

I have filled out the application to be a voter registrar and already have seven different dates in the next two months to man voter registration tables at different events that our county and local Democrat group set up.

But how do we educate the masses? How do we get the word out? We were brainstorming at a meeting this morning about putting up our own signs, but these would have the CORRECT information and the CORRECT election date, etc.

Taking this back to the Voter Rights Act of 1965, I realize poll taxes and literacy tests, etc are gone, but how far have we really come?
