I lived out there for years, so I know whereof I speak.

Anyone who believes that British Columbia is a hotbed of rednecks has never been there. It's not called the Left Coast for nothing. The ground is positively littered with hippies, ex-hippies, free spirits, UFO-ologists, tree huggers and other interesting people.

The American (Georgia Pacific) problem with Canadian softwood lumber predates the Gulf War, predates GWI. It is purely a Southern commercial response to competition that provides cheaper, straighter, construction grade lumber due to better forest management (although it has large problems) and a large investment in improved technology.

Dave Rutherford is an ass. I often listened to him as I was driving between 500 & 1,000 km a day and he is ubiquitous. The people he claims to represent listen for a variety of reasons. I listened because he was entertaining. His conspiracy theories and hate against "LIEBERALS" are straight out of an opium dream. His callers are the same people, day after day, on any topic. They all regurgitate what Dave has told them, not a thinker in the bunch. I remeber one who was PROUD of the fact he had never been outside Alberta, not even to Saskatchewan.!

I'm not sure why the FREEPER thinks a federal Liberal should be elected to Provincial office.

I'm a relatively new poster, are they all this brain dead? The best basis for pontification is ignorance- they seem to prove that.

...of fascism. To denounce a whole class of people as traitors (Coulter) is only a short step from mass brown-shirt violence. The ones who are out in the "mainstream" like Coulter are acting as transmitters for much farther-right whackos like this item. They tone the ideas down slightly, just enough to make them "respectable" (though the fact that Coulter and Limbaugh are considered tolerable is only a measure of how far the country has moved to the right), and from there they filter into even more mainstream discourse.

These kinds of ideas are always out there, what's different now is that they are afforded much more respectability among a wider spectrum of people.

I worry about what may be unleashed if (when) a Dem wins the White House in 2004. The rigidity and intolerance threshold has been raised to a dangerously high level, and they're still cranking it up.

There's a fascist (or crypto-fascist) blackmail that says "Placate our anger or there will be an explosion." Worked quite well for 'em in Florida, as you might have noticed. I think this is a building and scary subtext to the 2004 election. Look for it to become more and more prominent the more it looks like a real contest that Bush might lose.
