i used to boast a clinton/gore bumper sticker, and a peace sign, and an 'impeach bush' sticker, and i always seemed to get periodically vadalized. keyed, spit on the car, obscene words in magic marker, and of course, yelled and given the finger.

i stopped putting anything at all on my cars a few years ago.
am i a chickenshit? things are getting really heated this year politically, and the pigs are riled up good, cause they know they could well lose this november, and that makes them dangerous.

and after reading mari's post, i am a little bit concerned.

Basically, you get a blank sheet of that flat refrigerator magnet material...I don't know from where, but I imagine it's the kind of thing they have at craft stores...put your bumper sticker on that, and trim it to fit. That way you can take it off when you park and are vulnerable to keying.

I work for an organization that, at least in theory, aspires to be genuinely apolitical. That's not real in practice, of course -- it's pretty conservative in many ways. I worry about offending customers and therefore endangering not only my job, but the jobs of others, so as far as my vehicle is concerned, I keep my opinions to myself for the most part. My car is paid for, and if I worked for a private company and didn't have to worry about endangering my employer or my job, I probably would put at least a campaign sticker on. In this economy, though, I don't want to be out looking for a job because I got fired for doing something that damaged the reputation of my employer (however stupid it might seem, from somebody else's perspective, that it might be said that a Kerry sticker on my car might damage my employer's reputation; it's a realistic response I'd expect if I put on one there).

Hubby still has his Dean sticker on his car, has had it on for the best part of a year, and nobody's ever bothered it either on our street or in any of the places it's parked. I live in a place that's about 50/50 in voter registration, though, and apparently there are plenty of people -- some of them retired military -- who are disgruntled enough about the direction of the country, we're far from alone.

Now, do I worry more about it in today's political climate than I would have worried about it four years ago, all other things being equal? Yeah, I do. I don't think you're a coward. We all have our reasons.

I have had a couple people try to intimidate me by tailgating or flashing their brights, etc. but I'm an old street punk so in those cases I've stopped in the middle of the road and started to get out of the car then they always take off at a high rate of speed. All the things you list that they do you'll notice is while they are safely in their car or you're nowhere around when they could do them. in a library, at a "stop-n-go" gas station/shop, and goes to college (all part-time). His favorite t-shirts include two of Castro, and one of Che'. I suggest to him that he give thought where he wears them. College=anything goes. The library is cool. But the store is owned by republicans. It's kind of the same with cars. You have to consider not only what you want to express, but also what the reaction will be. I think it's a shame that the left has kind of allowed the right to "own" the flag. I drive a nice looking car, I'm middled aged, female...I don't "look" like a 60's radical, I'm partially disabled...no, I'm not afraid to plaster the back of my "nice" van with all types of slightly inflammatory stickers.

In addition, I wear homemade "badges" with swap-out style cards that can read whatever I put on them from one day to the next. I proudly wear them into the grocery, the church, around town...anyplace. They are a great conversaton starter, especially when I'm in a less than activist crowd. :)

I can't go door to door, or campaign, so these are the ways I get the publics attention and do my part.

I also noted, at a rally I went to today, that people are making their own T-shirts to read whatever they feel relevant for the cause.

We have a Kerry sticker on the car. We had a Wes Clark for President sign on the car earlier. I don't think that most people around here even knew who that was. I've noticed that there are no political bumper stickers on any cars around here at the moment, other than a couple I've seen for some very, very local election. I've worried about being keyed, but this election is more important than my car and if we want Kerry to stand up to the Bush cabal, the least we can do is put a sticker to that effect on a car.

is put my "If you want Peace, work for Justice" bumperstickers on--one in English, one in Spanish. (I bought a bunch of these the last time I got a new car and had to leave the one's on my old one.)
