Democracy Now! To Report on Aristide's Return to the Caribbean

Friday, March 12th, 2004

SPECIAL UPDATE: Democracy Now! To Report on Aristide's Return to the Caribbean

Democracy Now!'s Amy Goodman is accompanying a delegation to the Central African Republic today to report on Haitian President Jean Betrand Aristide's trip to Jamaica. Members on the delegation include U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Randall Robinson. Please vist the Democracy Now! website throughout the weekend for updates.

The following is a press release from Randall Robinson about the trip:

Both within the United States as well as within the Caribbean community there have been efforts, over the past two weeks, to have President and Madame Aristide returned to the Caribbean. A delegation is now on its way to the Central African Republic to meet with President and Madame Aristide, and to accompany them to Jamaica, where Prime Minister P.J. Patterson has announced the Aristides will be residing for the next several weeks. U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters, author Randall Robinson, and attorney Ira Kurzban are the American members of the delegation, and Jamaican parliamentarian Sharon Hay-Webster will be representing the Government of Jamaica and Caricom. Accompanying the delegation are Peter Eisner of the Washington Post and Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!

The delegation is expected to arrive in the Central African Republic on Sunday, March 14, and is expected to arrive in Jamaica, along with the Aristides, on Monday March 15, 2004.

1. OH SHIT *, U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) will
be on the plane with Aristide. That pretty much rules out "plane crashes" no matter what BFEE would like to do to Aristide, having a member of Congress on board would make it very touchy to have a plane crash.

3. yeah, too many "name" people on that plane, i'd think
too many name people on that plane. If anything were to happen, it would be hard if not impossible to sweep it aside or spin it.

And, I'd bet that some of them were thinking along these lines, too. Why do they need to travel to CAR just to turn around to escort Aristide back, when they could wait til Tuesday and fly to Jamaica to see him?

I'm sure there will be some good stuff coming out of that trip on the plane though. It will be the first time that Aristide and his wife are really free, as least from the CAR, to speak out.
