I was here in NYC on that day. I was mostly in shock. I watched the towers fall from the roof of my building in Queens. I watched as innocent lives were lost over somebody else's rage. I don't deny that rage, but it is misplaced in acts like this.
Anyway, I applaud the people of Spain and their numbers for taking it to the streets. They knew why they they were targeted and they knew why and who had targeted them.
Back in NYC, we were in shock. it was at least a week before I ventured back into the city. I had a doctor's appointment near Union Square and made a point of arriving early so I could review the make shift memorials. It was unlike anything I've ever seen in NYC. It was crowded and reverent. We were really in touch with our sorrow at this assault on our country. Man, I wanted to blow these guys into smithereens. Damn. They already did that to themselves in the process.
OK. Go get them un-elected George. Make me proud. Um, I thought they were in Afghanistan. Oh, the threat is really from Iraq. Now, obviously not. So, we're back to Afghanistan and Operation Mountain Storm. Meanwhile we've lost over 500 military lives in the "process" that lied about imminent threats of WMD on the US. We now know that the reasons for pre-emptive actions were false and misguided. That’s further complicated by the coalition of the willing and the corruption of the bidding process to rebuild the Iraq that the * administration (that’s us, in our name) destroyed.
I would be pissed about it (and I am) regardless of where I live. Spain has the hindsight of 9/11 now. The majority of the Spanish people did not support the US invasion of Iraq and their government’s support of it. Did they get jobs or contracts for their government’s support? No. Around 200 innocent people got blown up. I would take it to the streets like they did. God bless them. I can truly identify with their mourning and I’ve seen enough to understand their outrage.
Next time we’re hit, if we have any streets left, we will go there in protest and maybe looking for food, cigarettes, etc.
