Today's (3/14) elections -- Spain and Russia
Spain has parliamentary elections... 350 seats in lower house and 208 in the Senate. Before the bombings, Aznars's party was favored by 5 points in the one poll I see referred to in the news. Cnn info on the election:
http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/election.watch/europe/spain2.html

Unfortunately I can't read Spanish and can't find the closing time for the Spanish elections.

Russia is holding stage one (there's a second stage if necessary) of their Presidential election. Putin, running as an independent, is expected to be reelected....

Any help with the Spanish results would be appreciated!

1. In Spain, Andalusia also has regional elections
It looks like PSOE will win solid there - again.

Numbers of registered voters and other trivia about national elections can be found http://elmundo.es/elmundo/2004/03/13/enespecial/1079169824.html">here (in Spanish)

As soon as the (last) ballot boxes are sealed, the first exit poll results will be released; before that, it's voter turnout data only that will be released.

4. In Spain, people are misreading the polls.
Aznar's party won the last election by far more than 5 points or so. They won by 12.5%. If they only win by 3-5 points, they are losing a huge portion of their edge in parliament and in fact may face a situation in which a PSOE/United Left coalition could have close to a majority.

5. At 6:30pm, turnout almost 8% higher than in 2000 (Spain)
http://elmundo.es/elmundo/2004/03/14/enespecial/1079235442.html

According to data published by the Interior Ministry (also in charge of elections) at 6:28pm Madrid time, 63,06% of registered voters had cast their vote - compared to 55,45% at the same time during the general elections of 2000.

Just over 34.5 million Spaniards are registered to vote today.

In about 15 minutes, the first exit poll results will be published (that's 8pm Madrid time, when the ballot boxes are sealed in mainland Spain; on the Canary Islands, voters have one more hour)

7. Keep this bumped
Important topic. I'm very curious to see which way the bombings move the election....whether they vote in favor of the party that sent troops to Iraq or against.

Very Very curious

9. UNBELIEVABLE!!! We WIN!!!

If this is confirmed (it's just an exit poll projection) there'll be a coalition government with Izquierda Unida, comparable to the German SDP / Green Party coalition Government.

W00T!!!

11. More exit polls: not unanimous...
http://www.elpais.es/comunes/2004/elecciones2004/index.html

Tele5 (part of Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi's media empire) is the exception and predicts a close win for PP... Others point to a reverse result...

A nailbiter!
