1. there is zero security

at Grand Central Station. zero.

I saw a report where you have to show an ID to buy a ticket but... somehow I don't believe they've shut down all the TICKET MACHINES.

during the last "elevated terror alert" (btw, has anyone heard the 'color code' mentioned recently) anyone (with or without a ticket) could have boarded any train carrying anything.

the same is true at Port Authority and Penn Station.

and subways? transit buses? please.

you pay your fare and take your chances.

4. Chicago's no better

There are signs everywhere that you must have ID to buy and board all Amtrak trains. I think I showed ID when I bought from the ticket counter because my signature is all blurry on my credit card. The ID issue never showed up again. (Chicago to Milwaukee, if it matters.)

And they do let you board without a ticket -- you can buy on board for a 10% markup. (Hell, if you board in Sturtevant, which is south of Milwaukee, near Racine, you have to buy on board, and the markup is waived. There's no agent at the station.)

Are America's train and bus networks adequately secured?

What can we do to secure them without causing some frustration among the traveling public and also inviting the real possibility of false arrests?

I think that Americans have to face up to the fact that no matter what precautions we put in place we are never going to be able to prevent all the terrorist attacks. We have to admit our vulnerability to ourselves... not something Americans have generally been inclined to do.

I do think that Americans are not individually very aware of their surroundings though. Our government has instituted all these color codes, but it has done nothing to make us aware of what to look for and be alert about other than telling us to watch out for dark, Middle Eastern looking individuals.

When we were visiting our son and daughter-in-law in Israel, I happened to notice a purse that looked lost. I was about to turn it in to the restaurant staff, but my son stopped me. As it turned out, it was just a purse that was not too close to its owner, but in Israel, when people see an apparently lost object they call a policeman to come and check it out. That's one example of what our government might educate us about, but it doesn't.

that shrub is not making us safer....if he was there would be an overwhelming positive response to this question.

"Steady leadership in a time of change" is not translating to Americans feeling safer. ....it's time he worked on a new ad slogan.

6. You have got to be kidding...this country is wide open.

That is one reason I think the government does'nt really think terrorism is that big a threat...and therefore, neither do I.

Airport security has been somewhat beefed up, but what about all those cargo containers coming into the country, the Democrats in Congress keep talking about on C-Span? Until I see some action on THAT front, I simply cannot believe anyone really views terrorism as a serious threat.

Other people here know more about mass transit than I do, but I doubt if the govt. has done a damn thing to make it more secure. Is it any wonder that people like me have got to wonder?
