That Bill Clinton "trip" to New York after September 11, 2001

Just wondered if everyone found that Bill Clinton "trip" (for lack of a better word) to New York after September 11, 2001 to be more reassuring since he undoubtedly seemed to give a hang about New Yorkers, unlike a certain successor of his we all know of, who seemed to treat HIS visit as "just another photo op."

1. If I remember right

he went to his office in Harlem and was talking to regular people on the street. He identiified with them because Chelsea was in NYC and apparently was supposed to be very near the WTC on 9-11.

Also Bill had been in Australia and I am not sure how they got him back to NYC since planes were grounded, but he got there.

Seeing him there made me feel better.

A real President cares for the people for more than just photo ops. Bush* stood on a pile of rubble and made an appearance(photo op) then left. President Clinton stayed for weeks and gave solace to the grief stricken.

Clinton did something Bush did not do. He took to the streets & comforted the people.He would walk down the street & hug,listen to those who lost loved ones & put his hand on their shoulder.He'd inspire them & just show support.This is what Bush needed to do right away.WHat did it say for Clinton to hit the street almost the next day & then Bush came 3 or 4 days later.

Even people I know who didn't like Clinton praised him for that.IMO,Clinton knew the country needed a President & since Bush was to much of a COWARD,he took over.There was a site that had tons of Pics of Clinton walking down the street comforting people.It was a beautiful site & something a brave leader would do.

I sent that picture out a lot via e-mail after September 11th. That photograph warmed my heart. The little boy was just happy to see him.

Let's hear it for a President that doesn't hide from Americans by using a "First Amendment zone", and who traveled long hours to be with the people of New York City at a time of unimaginable loss.

Yes! Undoubtedly! In the days after 9-11, Bush was roundly criticized in the city--in the media and among regular New Yorkers--for his bizarre behavior on 9-11 and the next couple of days.

I wonder if anyone besides me remembers Bush's first ultra awkward attempt to address people's criticisms of him. "I'm a loving man," I remember him telling reporters. And I remember thinking, who gives a shit what you say you are, you inept asshole!

Why don't we send out emails,fliers,articles,etc.of CLinton going to New York right after 9/11. Remind the public how Clinton flew from the other part of the planet to get to NY & still beat Bush.Remind the people how CLinton was there to listen & comfort,not campaign for a phot-op for reelection!This could be done in very good taste & could boost up support for Kerry/the Democratic party.

26. Clinton flew as far as he could, then drove and drove

I remember an interview with him as part of a 9-11 documentary. I seem to recall that the airplane could only take him as far as Canada, and then he started driving. He hooked up with Al Gore once he got back into the States, and then they drove to NYC together. Clinton was worried about Chelsea and Hillary, of course, but also just flat-out wanted to get back to the USA in this time of crisis and do whatever he was able to do.

I hope I have the details right -- but the main thing is that Bill Clinton's instincts are right, and his heart is big. He knew where he had to be, and he went there. He knew people needed consolation and compassion as much as they needed anything else, and he gave it to them.

On Edit: Whatever I thought about Bush before 9-11, on that day I wanted and needed my president to talk and act like a president and not a jerk in a job too big for him. I was desperate to hear him say something along the lines of "We have nothing to fear but fear itself," but instead we got "Be afraid, be very afraid." Giuliani rose to the occasion and became "the country's mayor" for awhile when we were all staggering with grief and shock over the attack on his city. Giuliani's no prize, but he managed to do what was needed right then. Bush just seems to be hollow.

13. I'm a New Yorker and you're totally right

I was really comforted by Clinton's presence here as were a lot of other New Yorkers. He dropped everything and came here to console us and just be there for us during a very trying time. That man shows so much class and dignity, his very presence gave us comfort, but he went beyond that and actually went on the streets and talked to people and hugged them, etc. Everybody I know really appreciated it. OTOH everyone I know already hated Chimpy but hated him even more cause he couldn't even be bothered to show up and *pretend* to care until like 3 days after the fact, then used us like a photo-op.

Nobody here has forgotten that. That, coupled with the broken promises, underfunding of our first responders and the fact that Bumblefuck, Wyoming gets more federal money for security than we do (and we're arguably target #1 in the country) is why we are going to be out by the millions in August. New Yorkers are sick and fucking tired of the Chimp and Repukes using our 3,000 friends, family and neighbors as tools to prop up their sick, twisted Gaia-hating agenda. We will be in the streets.

Who was it? Oh, only Bill Clinton in front of the missing persons' office, interviewing TV cameras and consoling those who lost loved ones, whose signs you may have seen on CNN.

Many of the people CNN showed were with the President when I was there. (I got about 6 feet away, and as a side note: I saw Chelsea Clinton and later we waved at each other. You have to admit that's kinda neat!)

He hugged and spoke with the people carrying the signs. It was Bill Clinton at his best--consoling us when we needed consoling. Many of us in the crowd shouted our words of support for the President and Chelsea, who was softly crying most of the time. It was very moving to see Clinton with people crying hysterically over their loss, the former President offering words of support and caring as he always has.

28. I remember Clinton and Bush both attended a memorial service

for the victims. I didn't know much about Bush then, except that
he was pretty dumb, but I noticed how at the end of the service,
he and Laura just marched straight down the aisle of the church,
out into the street and into their car. They spoke to nobody, shook
no hands, greeted no-one. That was the first time I really noticed
him, and I wasn't impressed.

Clinton left a few moments afterwards, and was shaking hands, talking
and touching people, and I thought "well, I know who looks like a
President."

In the next few days, of course Bush was seen making speeches and
threats, and I was amazed that newspapers started saying how he
looked like a leader at last. I was very surprised, because I
thought he looked like a myopic idiot. I noticed how whatever he
said, the expression in his eyes never changed - they were always
quite dead.

And that was when I became interested in how the media can manipulate
people, and I started paying more attention to what was going on in
the U.S.
