'Special skills draft' on drawing board
Computer experts, foreign language specialists lead list of military's needs

Washington -- The government is taking the first steps toward a targeted military draft of Americans with special skills in computers and foreign languages.

The Selective Service System has begun the process of creating the procedures and policies to conduct such a targeted draft in case military officials ask Congress to authorize it and the lawmakers agree to such a request.

Richard Flahavan, a spokesman for the Selective Service System, said planning for a possible draft of linguists and computer experts had begun last fall after Pentagon personnel officials said the military needed more people with skills in those areas.

"Talking to the manpower folks at the Department of Defense and others, what came up was that nobody foresees a need for a large conventional draft such as we had in Vietnam," Flahavan said. "But they thought that if we have any kind of a draft, it will probably be a special skills draft."

10. I thought conservatives want to shrink the size of government
Won't this have the effect of making more government employees? Why not outsource the work to India?

13. Alright with me.
I'll get in shape, learn how to kill with my bare hands and then sit in front of a computer screen for several months.

odds are i'll never get shot at, i'll never kill anyone and it will look good on my resume when i run for president circa 2028.

sure my house will probably get foreclosed on so my wife will have to move in with her mom and probably divorce me, but i don't like to think about others. </sarcasm>

23. drafting women
They're already planning on drafting women in the medical profession, so it wouldn't surprise me if they draft women in the computer & linguist fields.

24. The planned SSPDS being readied includes women -- Sorry!
Edited on Mon Mar-15-04 01:19 PM by Dems Will Win
Women under the age of 45 with the skills specified by the DoD must register at the local PO within 30 days of the DRAFT being reauthorized (right now it looks like April 1, 2005 will be the day Bush goes to the Congress for that). NO DEFERMENTS except in case of essential community need. Just like the Medical DRAFT (HCPDS). So have her switch jobs to an essential one at the local police department or something like that.

This is all to code millions of lines for Star Wars.

20. Right, like Republicans haven't done their share in helping China along
in that superpower status. Unbelievable the ignorance of the right-wing. They probably still haven't figured out that China got a nuclear jump-start during the Reagan-Bush Bush-wotisname era.
