I was in NY a couple of weeks ago and took in a few shows. There were a couple of slaps at Chimpy that got huge laughs and applause.
In Hairspray (referring to the use of political influence to ensure that our heroine is imprisoned so her nemesis is assured of winning a dance contest): "Manipulating the judicial system just to win a contest is....unAmerican!"
And in Avenue Q, there's a song called "For Now" that lists a bunch of things in life that are temporary (i.e., "for now"). The one line that almost got a standing ovation was "George Bush is for now!"
I was encouraged at the great response to both of these lines. Granted, NYC is pretty liberal, but these shows also take in a lot of tourists from all over the country.
Bonus political line from Avenue Q: when the closeted gay puppet is seeking his advice about his "friend" with a "problem," the woman his talking to tells him that there's nothing wrong with being gay, that homosexuals have contributed a lot to art, literature, music, etc. He tells her that his "friend" is an investment banker -- and a Republican. She responds, "Oh, he should just stay in the closet. He's not good for anything." Again, huge, huge laughs and applause. Take that, you Log Cabin types! :P
