You should watch it if you don't know about this chapter of American history. Not much has changed in the ranks of power...mostly the sheets and hoods have been exchanged for three piece suits and some military uniforms and police uniforms.

I've been wondering about that.

They have HOURS of programming telling us way more than we want to know about Hitler and cohorts (I mean, a biography of the head of the Luftwaffe? Puhlease...). But it seemed they have very, very little about the German-American Bund. And very little about the Maquis (resistance) in France, to boot.

I think that failing to fully examine our own country's complacency about, and cooperation with, the Nazis in Germany (pre-Pearl Harbor) is one of the 'sins' of the 20th century that has lead to where we are now.

Way too much got swept under the rug, and many, many people who were supporting the Nazis (pre-Pearl Harbor) never had to answer for it.

3. I grew up in Tennesee...

...which is a couple thousand miles, and a hundred or so years removed from California. The "secret" is not so secret out there.

An example of a joke:

Q: What is yellow, and black, and funny as hell?
A: A bus load of niggers going off the side of a cliff.

DIsgusting, vile, racist, and full of bad taste, as it is, and as reprehensible as it sounds, little kids would laugh when adults would tell them this joke. I don't miss living in clan country one little iota....

5. "Birth of a Nation" The film that depicted blacks as ravaging rapists

and endorsed by Wilson actually made many people believe that what the film showed was true history. Now you can see why many Jews might feel about the "Passion" the way they do. Blacks felt the same way about this movie but no one came to their defense...that's the big difference.

The Klan wrapped itsself in God and the flag just as the Bushites are doing now. With that you can lead a nation to do the most horrible things imaginable to others. This history is repeating itsself now across Iraq and across America.

6. racist imagery, of the kind depicted in "birth of a nation"

was surprisingly commonplace in america...until fairly recently in our history. this is the country where people not only had picnics at lynchings (which was sometimes kind of "entertainment"), but also sent images of lynchings on postcards to as commemoration of the experience.
after a long and inglorius history of THAT, in forty or so years we evolved to "reverse discrimination" :eyes:

7. Wilson

There is some debate among Wilson specialists over whether he actually liked "Birth of a Nation" or if the quotes by him favoring it were made up by the film script writer (who knew Wilson) or by the Studio in order to sell it. (The Supreme Court Justice they also quoted swore that they had made up his supposed quotes favoring the film)

Wilson WAS a racist (most southerners who grew up during the Civil War and Reconstruction were) but he had no patience for the "Lost South" myth and he though the Klan were thugs. He didn't know what the movie was about when the film was shown to him (the director didn't want to tell him) and he left the room without saying a word when it was over. BTW, I've actually held his program for the showing of that film and it had been wadded into a ball as if in anger. No other movie or theater program of his was treated that way.

10. You know, it's scary how close we are to the Klan mentality now

This administration is enabling us to return to the same horrible state as during the Klan era. If you think blacks don't have a reason to fear and mistrust police, think again. Watch this documentary. This is a must see for no other reason than to wake people up to what can over take us if we are not careful. I have never seen this documentary before but it is horrifying that a nation could sit back allow this to happen. Jury nullification originated with the Klan, not OJ.

Catholics, Jews, but mostly blacks must have lived in absolute horror. Even unions were targeted. Later, the focus turned to "communists" during the McCarthy era but the mentality and the actors were essentially the same. The fact that a Supreme Court Justice who was a former member of the Klan coulb be put on the bench is even more reason for people to wake up an unseat this administration.

11. Bill Baxley...he is a hero.

You have to see this documentary to know that many whites did not agree with what the Klan did and some vowed to bring them to justice. Bill Baxley was one such person. This is an amazing documentary. There is a quote that was just made from the Federal report on the Klan that reminded me so much of this administration and its conservative, right wing, Christian supporters. If I can get it I will post it here.
