Woefully Uninformed Because I'm Scared
Since I first realized the media has become Shrubya's bitch, I have rarely watched the news. Quite frankly, it pisses me off, scares me and feeds into my Major Depression.

I would like to have access to a real "fair and balanced" news source, preferrably online...something that will tell me all I need to know about the day's happenings without the usual neo-con spin.

Suggestions?

1. BBC
It's the only source I trust as a first source these days.

Stay away from any U.S. source, they're all compromised and only provide propoganda.

2. Agree with Walt...
BBC is the way to go. If I could only have one source they are who I would look to.

3. no need to be scared...once you know the spin...the con..the angle
watching the media becomes a game...why do they say something when they say it...what are they not sharing.

All news is somehat slanted. Don't look for the media to save the day. They would really prefer that we don't become educated, think for ourlseves and share thier decpetion with others.

6. CBS is the only mainstream news source I watch.
They tend to do the best job of giving both sides of the story. Dan Rather is on record of holding a "liberal" viewpoint.

7. Don't be depressed because you are here with us now
If you read DU and Buzzflash you will get links to a lot of good information. More importantly, you can chat with people who have the same core beliefs that you do. So keep coming back and welcome! :hi:

12. Try Democracy Now
you can watch it on-line or on Free Speech TV on Dish Network. I guess I wouldn't necessarily call it "fair and balanced," but it certainly does NOT have a neocon spin.

I also agree about the BBC and Bill Moyers' NOW. I have to say that, of the cable news networks, I think MSNBC is proving themselves to be more skeptical than the rest. Frankly, what I find more disturbing than the neo-con spin of the cable news networks is their maddening insistence that we care about the scandal crime du jour.

On 9/11, I told my husband that one good thing would come of it: the news networks would never again think they could feed us silly scandals as news. I guess the whole world didn't change. I also thought 9/11 would spell the end of Star Wars.

I don't watch any TV news at all, I use the box solely for entertainment these days. Although it is sometimes good to know what the powers-that-be consider to be important.

Personally I like Alternet a whole lot - articles from many progressive sources. www.alternet.org

I also like BuzzFlash www.buzzflash.com but it can be a little overwhelming sometimes. At the bottom of the main page they have links to all sorts of sources which is helpful.

I like BBC too, I prefer to hear it on the radio but I don't think my public radio carries it (I used to listen on KUOW in WA)

By the way I also have the diagnosis "major depression" (recurring) so I can relate to your comment about current events getting you down. Sometimes it helps for me to set time limits on things like surfing the net or reading news if I feel like I'm spiraling down. (I'm certainly not doing that today though... it's muggy & hot, I've been online for hours!)

Edit: between the start and end of my post, lots of other people said what I said - oh well. I want to cast my vote for the Guardian too, though.

Not the prettiest site, but lots of choices. I like Mike Malloy and Mike Webb and DU's Guy James, but there are many, many more.

17. We just use the US press to stay up on what the SHEEPLE are thinking...
Cause the sheeple believe everything the US press tells them.

And we look at the US Press hoping for cracks in the lies and the coverups to come out -- and lately...a bit more truth has been coming out...slowly.

The Guardian has some really good analyses about what's happening in the US......

http://guardian.co.uk

And don't forget to pop onto www.democraticunderground.com and browse through the Late Breaking News (LBN) forum for a snapshot of all the news. It's AMAZING how so many people work sooooo hard and diligently to get the stories posted. I am indebted to all of them!

18. Well, if you were here to collect information about DUer's
news preferences, and took a poll.....my guess is that you find most trust the foreign press much more than what passes for news here in the U.S. Even though the tide seems to be turning, the suspicion is still there.

It all gets back to who is pulling the strings and making the editorial decisions...

23. 34 years working in radio and TV here
And the first place I go is "Latest Breaking News" on a rather obscure  website called Democratic Underground.

Ladyhawk, I venture to say that "fair and balanced" has become a moot point, given the massive rightward tilt of the mainstream media over the last decade. Even if one were to tally up the good and bad points of the bu$h regime, I fear the scales would be tipped so far in favor of bad that it would look like a cartoon. So there goes the "balanced" part.

As to fair, what I'd really like to see on my TV screen is a newcast that's as fair to the GOP as that party has been to us over the last decade. I guess what I'm saying is that we cannot afford to worry much about "balance" while the bu$h regime is moving so swiftly to tear down America.

I would endorse the many recommendations of news sources made by posters above. DU is absolutely loaded with individuals who spend much time and energy (Goddess bless 'em ALL!) finding and posting what you are seeking Good luck in your quest!
