$8.96 hr... My 55 yr old friend who was laid off from his $22.00 hr w/ benefits job , 8 months ago, applied.. It's a G-2 position.. He used to be civil service G-10 level..

anyway, he did not get the job... Why?? He did not have a bachelor's degree..:eyes:..

Am I the only one who thinks this is just plain NUTS !!! They have had so many applicants, that they are only considering the applicants with degrees..

They have a house, a 17 yr old senior, and a 14 yr old..They are going to lose their house soon..

1. It's ironic.
Plenty of places (for food service type jobs) won't consider you if you have a degree, because they figure you'll flee once the economy gets better. Sure, people will leave once the econ. gets better, but when the hell will that be? We've had 3 years of recession (or as I say, a depression) under Bush.

I'm sorry about your friend, SoCalDem. I never thought I'd see the economy get as bad as it is now. And also ironically, I'm seeing plenty of food service jobs in the Houston area that pay only $6 or $7 an hour. Bush's econ. policies are causing a lot of foreclosures and homelessness.

I used to chat almost daily with his wife, and then she semed to be working all the time, and Dave would "have a day off", and would answer when I called her.. I never put it together until he told me tonight.. A few months ago I was talking to his wife and she said he was on anti-depressants and he cried alot.. She was trying to hold him together...

Their "son" and "daughter" are actually their grandkids.. Their daughter was killed in a car accident when they were little,(3yrs & 6 mo) and even though they could have "fostered" the kids and been paid to do it, they adopted them, because they did not want the kids to feel as though they were being paid to look after them...

Their other daughter has moved back in with them to help on the expenses, but I don't know how much longer they can hold on ..

Thankfully, the son is very smart and has applied for scholarships, but if they do not come through, he will not be able to go to college.. That's weighing heavily on Dave..

4. I believe it
Many companies are requiring a degree/college experience for jobs that have nothing to do with education qualifications. They are so overwhelmed with job seekers that they use this as a screening method.

It is a way of thinning the applications/resumes. I interviewed for a job I found on Monster ($9/hr, no benefits, 3 month temp) and they received over 800 applications for it in one week! This was for a simple clerk temp position, yet they required some sort of college experience simply as a way to reduce the number of people who apply.

6. frightening
and outrageous. I feel for your friend. I think we are going to be seeing more and more of this. What will the government say when no one can afford to buy these high priced homes etc. Pretty soon credit reports won't allow anyone to buy a house what then?
