US lawmakers blame Spain, battle on Iraq resolution

By Vicki Allen

WASHINGTON, March 17 (Reuters) - U.S. Republicans charged Spain's new government with appeasing terrorists on Wednesday as politicians accused rivals of exploiting the Iraq war for election-year advantage in a bitter House (of Representatives) debate.

As the dust settled from a deadly explosion at a Baghdad hotel, Republicans trained their fire on Spain. The pro-Bush government was replaced in an election on Sunday, days after a series of train bombings and the new government has promised to pull Spanish troops from Iraq.

"Here is a country that stood against terrorism, and had a huge terrorist act within their country, and they chose to change their government and to in a sense appease terrorists," House Speaker Dennis Hastert said.

Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texas Republican, said, "If we follow the example of the new Spanish government and we accept failure in Iraq and permit the victory of the terrorists, there there will no counting the number of people around the world who will suffer the consequences."

House Republican leaders were pushing through a resolution to mark the March 19 U.S. anniversary of the war's start, praising U.S. troops and the Iraqi people.

3. Tom hasn't suffered any consequences
"Even though hundreds are dead in our ally's country, we STILL believe the world is a safer plave. We do, we do, we do." Go to Spain and the families that, DeLay. POS.

DeLay is two steps below a bucket of warm spit. Vile, beady-eyed little cur.

with * 'president' if they make it a resolution and tell us it is the truth then it must be so. What exactly is the point of this? Shouldn't they be doing something important?

8. It figures
"the world has become a safer place since the removal of Saddam Hussein" The warmonger majority have claimed that this would be the case, among others (WMD, etc.), since they set their sites on Iraq many years ago. Now they have decided that its official. The world is a safer place now that Saddam has been removed. I agree that Saddam was an evil man and needed to go away, but how do they explain this resolution to the people of Spain? To the families of American soldiers that are still dying on an almost daily basis in Iraq? They call it a resolution commending the Iraqi people and American and coalition troops, I call it begging the question.
:wtf: :grr: :nuke:

14. it was a trap
being sold as "supporting the troops" in an election year. Setting up Dems to be called unpatriotic. No changes allowed in the wording. Typical Republican crap.

31. agree, what a BS waste of time
this was a total setup to try to paint Dems as unpatriotic.

I can see how this would be a tough vote. Vote "no" and be smeared by the GOP and risk alienating part of your electorate. Vote "yes" knowing it's a sham, set-up, pointless measure, and be filled with self-loathing for falling into the trap. It's a lose-lose situation for us.

19. Well, gee, then it must be true
If a bunch of partisan, right wing hacks and some Democrats who don't have the balls to vote against the President say so, then it must be true.

WTF is their next resolution going to be?

Bush is great?

Tax cuts are awesome?

Ann Coulter is super hot?

22. Saying so doesn't make it so.
The 327-93 roll call Wednesday by which the House passed a resolution commending the Iraqi people and American and coalition troops and stating that the world has become a safer place since the removal of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) a year ago.

With bombs going off in Baghdad and bombs going off in Madrid, I do wonder how the world has become safer? The Representatives can say whatever they like, but they are spitting in the wind if the world doesn't believe what they are saying and facts don't support what they are saying.

The Iraqi people and the troops do deserve commendation for their strength and courage, but I doubt they appreciate the commendation for the reasons it was offered... and I doubt they feel safer.

25. A small truth selling a big lie.
The world is net less safe. Enron accounting again by the Repubs... They highlight assets and hide liabilities. If the Iraq war were a business, Republicans would be looking at jail time.

Take Saddam out of the world without having an unnecessary war to do it. Then the world would have been net safer and America net richer. But that is not what happened. We made a poor trade with the Iraq war, and we lost bad on the bottom line.

27. ok
dismantle all WMDs, programs and WMD related activities
remove all barriers, metal detectors, and guards from government facilities
eliminate the DHS
toss Patriot act I and II
fire the secret service
mandates:
*jr will now travel, solo- in a GEO Metro convertible
Cheney will remain out of hiding
Ashcroft will fly on regular airlines
get rid of those annoying middle of the night emergency broadcast system tests

-----
In the event someone with bad intentions did not receive the memo that the world is now a safer place, and said person threatens, or performs, any act of terror, responsibility for said act shall lie solely upon the shoulders of those declaring the world a safer place.

-----
I'm sure there's more that can be added to the list, but I don't have time right now. I'm in the middle of removing the doors from our house. (I'm sure my rep is doing the same.)

-----
Cue the music:

Here's a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note..............

32. All terrorist activity since Jan 2001 has happened under Bush*'s watch
Make a resolution that for the world to be a safer place get rid of the Bush* Cabal. I would go for that kind of resolution that reflects reality instead of fantasy.
