I made Newsday re: Peter Kings attack on my morality.
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 09:03 AM by Bleachers7
As some of you know, Pete King (R-NY CD 3) persoanlly attacked me for insinuating that the boy king lied. This morning I was sleeping and I heard my sister talking to someone about it. I thought she was talking to my girlfriend because she is the only one my sister knows that knows about it. She wasn't. She was talking to her friend who saw it in NEWSDAY :). Here are the story and the links.

Constituent's letter

gets pointed response

A Bellmore man this week learned how deeply Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) supports President George W. Bush's decision to invade Iraq.

Harry Halikias believed the president lied about invading to destroy weapons of mass destruction. So he wrote to King urging he vote to censure Bush for dishonesty.

King declined.

Halikias was fine with most of King's March 11 reply letter, which read, "I disagree with you in every respect. ... President Bush is an outstanding leader of outstanding integrity."

But the congressman also wrote, "You are morally, intellectually and politically wrong."

That angered Halikias. "I am blown away by it. How can he judge my morality and how intellectual I am?" he said. "He personally attacked me based on an issue important to my community."

In an interview Tuesday, King said he'd been deliberately blunt. "He was personally attacking the president, and I was defending the president."

Halikias was especially upset because he has supported King. "If I'm so morally bankrupt, why did I vote for him?" the constituent said.

King responded, "I guess he's undecided now."

1. they always complain about "attacks"
but never talk about whether the attacks are justified or not. Bush's lies are PUBLIC RECORD, for pete's sake.

5. YOU GO !!!! Come on DU, let's stick it to this asshole!!!
I caught your post about this. I sent an email saying "I am greatly troubled by your response to one of your constituents. Your behavior has been unprofessional and insulting. I will personally contribute to your opponent's campaign when you run next."

We should all do it. We should also e-mail the media

6. My email
I've written my Republican Senator, Gordon Smith, on numerous occasions. I did not vote for him and would not vote for him. But I do respect him because he is a decent man and I do think he follows his moral beliefs, however misguided I may personally think his beliefs are.

After all these years and many harsh criticisms of his votes, he has never once found the need to judge or criticize my morality or intellect. Because I so strongly believe in Mr. Smith's character, I encourage you to ask him about your remarks to your constituent, Mr. Harry Halikias. There is no doubt in my mind what he will recommend you do.

8. Keep track of King's letters
I don't know who Congressman King is but I will bet that one of his aides wrote this letter. If he did write it himself, this is a pretty pathetic for a member of Congress to address a constituent this way. As much as I can't stand Bill McCullom, when he was my congressman he helped me with a very sticky IRS problem. Hey, that's what their paid to do. John Mica also helped the son of a friend of mine who was trying to get an early discharge from the Navy and the family were very strong Democrats.

Dear Rep. King,

You should rethink your blind loyalty to President Bush. TV appearances I've seen you make, and now your rude letter to your constituent Harry Halikias, suggest that you've lost sight of things.

Many of us believe that Bush should have been impeached long ago, but for the failure of your party to do its duty. In addition to failing to impeach him, your party is also covering up for him by blocking investigations.

You're on the wrong side. You should be on the side of Harry and me and the rest of us, not on the side of the worst president ever.

Thank you,

Regardless of what you told the reporter, did you vote for him? Or did you not tell the truth to the reporter in order to make a different point?

28. I told him one thing and he printed it almost right.
If you check my thread from earlier in the week you will see that I said that I called King. The reporter daid that I wrote him. I said that I supported him. The reporter wrote that I voted for him. It is true that I supported him. I supported him the day that he voted against impeachment. I also supported him when he helped McCain. That is different than voting for. I didn't say anything that was untrue.

31. If you were intentionally characterizing yourself as a supporter in order
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 01:10 AM by AP
to overstate what this letter was costing King, I can't help but admit that I derive great satisfaction from knowing that all those times I was defending Edwards against what I thought were outrageous crtiicisms, I was debating with someone who was willing to do that.

I've agreed with King on at least two things, but I'd never characterize myself as a supporter.

17. Here's the e-mail I sent
You question the morality and intellect of one of your constituents, but not that of a “president” that starts a war resulting in the needless death of 500+ Americans, and the disdain of the world community towards the US? You’re lucky if Harry is only “undecided”…..if it were me, I’d be campaigning for your opponent.

23. Support is a very loose term.
I once supported King. It was the day he voted against impeachment. There are two errors in the article. I called King. I didn't send him a letter. And I said I supported him. Not voted for him.

26. You didn't vote for King, then, but you considered yourself a supporter?
Are you saying you misrepresented your level of support to the reporter in order to make it sound like King lost something big with you, although you're admitting to us that you never would have voted for him, and he really didn't lose anything with you?

33. It was like 2 intense debates.
And I have commented on that at least once. It was after Oklahoma when a bunch of Edwards supporters went on the attack on Clark. I punched back a little. I still believe that supporting bankruptcy reform that he did was terrible. It was a favor for the banks and the shaft for consumers. Remember, Edwards proudly supported all the bad sruff the last few years including a damning case for war in Iraq.

34. I guess it all depends on what the word "support" means when you
say he supported bankruptcy reform and all that other "bad sruff" the last few years.

If you know what I mean.

Because "support" is a tricky word.

27. Dear Mr. King...
Dear Mr. King,

After reading your response to Henry Halikias' letter requesting you vote to censure President Bush for lying to the American people in the run-up to his war in Iraq, I thought I should remind you, that while you have every right to profess your allegiance to Mr. Bush, it's not a good idea to berate your constituents. Mr. Bush is not going to vote for you. Your allegiance should lie with those who have elected you. I would also like to forewarn you - when you have found yourself out of a job, don't expect Mr. Bush to create one for you. He's not very good at it.

Sincerely,

Kimber Scott
AZ

P.S. When I write to my elected officials with a position they don't agree with, they are usually kind enough to respectfully state their position without questioning my morality, or my IQ, and they even make some sort of effort to either get, or retain, my vote.
