Forgive me if this has already been posted here but it is so good I thought it needed to be seen by the most people possible. Here's Randi on CNN ripping a new one for a conservative talk show guy from Philly.

...and writes a column for the Philly Daily News. I wrote a letter to the editor regarding one of his pieces. It was about Bush not testifying before the 9/11 commission. The article was a real weasely piece of shit. It started out as though it was criticizing Bush for not going before the commission but then ends up spouting the usual RW talking points about how the Dems want to use the commissions findings for political purposes. Below is the letter I wrote. It has yet to be published.

Re:Michael Smerconish's March 6 editorial "The Prez's Sins of Commission". It won't do Mr.Smerconish. The piece initially seems to be criticizing the Bush administration for its lack of cooperation with the Independent Commission Investigating 9/11 only to later lapse into the usual rightwing talking points about how the Democrats want to use the commissions finding for polititcal purposes during the election season. He thinks that House Speaker Dennis Hastert's comments to this effect are "fair". Nonsense!! If the Bush administration had been cooperating with the commission from the start instead of withholding information, documents, and testimony (not to mention initially balking at the commission's creation) the commission could have probably finished its work by now thus leaving a sufficient amount of daylight between its final findings and the election season. If the commission's findings were to be released during Bush's reelection campaign he'd have only himself to blame. Smerconish quotes Hastert (without comment) as saying that the commission "had over a year and...literally hundreds of thousands of dollars..." to do its work. Hundreds of thousands of dollars?!?! Actually, it was more like 13 million dollars the last I heard, but the fact that Hastert thinks that "hundreds of thousands" would be sufficient to investigate a tragedy as enormous as Sept.11 speaks volumes--especially considering that something in the neighborhood of 40 million dollars was spent to investigate the space shuttle Columbia disaster which claimed seven lives as compared to 9/11's nearly three thousand. But Smerconish doesn't see fit to mention any of this. Also without commenting, Smerconish quotes Hastert as saying that "There is a belief by some that they would like to drag this thing out and drag it out and then have death by a thousand cuts." Who exactly are "they"? If he's talking about the Bush administration then he's right on the nose--especially the "death by a thousand cuts" part. But I suspect he's talking about the Democrats which makes his comment utter nonsense. It's not the Democrats who are withholding the information and testimony that the commission needs in order to do its work. Then Smerconish comes up with a doozy of his own. Acknowledging the likelihood of the Democrats using the commission finding against Bush Smerconish states, "Still, that is no reason to impede this important work". That's true enough, but then he follows up with this:"In fact, that is a reason the report should be delayed, not expedited". Don't impede it, just delay it. What Smerconish's piece ultimately reveals is that he is less concerned with the families of 9/11 victims than he is with Bush's reelection and the possibility that a second term for Bush could be imperiled if anything embarrassing or outright damning were revealed in the commission's final report. Smerconish can say that he doesn't want to see the commissions work impeded but anyone who's been paying attention to the way this administration does business will know that delaying the commissions findings will mean producing as many impediments as this administration can pull out of its behind. Something tells me that Mr.Smerconish knows this full well. Don't pretend to be concerned about the victims' families, Mr.Smerconish. I see right through you.

I doubt very much she would stand a chance against Randi Rhodes. Rhodes even took Oliver North apart on her show one day. He didn't know what hit him. He was stunned! Manthrax is too much of a coward though so we'll never have the opportunity to see Randi eviscerate her in public. It would be nice, but I doubt very much we'll ever get the chance to see it.

the first time I saw him on CNN one Sunday AM I was surprised because no one here takes him seriously in the least. Even the schmucks who call in on 1210 AM - which used to be a high quality CBS-owned station, think he's a goofball. He purports to be a lawyer but is just a whining, Philly-neighborhood-geek who's trying to make a name and money for himself. To see him on the national stage reminds me of the great Philip Roth anecdote in Portnoy's Complaint where the protagonist asks an old buddy whatever happened to a friend of theirs, and the other guy announces that the guy is "a professor of romance languages at Princeton." "Princeton? The guy used to cheat off me on Spanish tests and now he's a professor?" Or words to that effect...

What's this guy doing here?
