So I just made a withdrawal from the Diebold ATM at the office
It printed out a receipt telling me my checking account balance was $7,960.53.

Believe me, I've never had that kind of money in my checking account. This particular machine belongs US Bank, which is not where I do my business. Fearing I might have some kind of horrible banking mess to straighten out, I raced back to my cube to check on line what my bank says my balance is. That turned out to be what I would expect to see.

So, now I'm wondering, if Diebold starts printing receipts for their voting machines, can they be trusted?

2. Thanks a lot! You just voted for Buchanan!
Makes you wonder about the receipts - but that's the point. You can check right there if your "account" was recorded correctly.

3. having an actual ballot (not Receipt)...
is the first step in verifying your vote.

4. Ah... the possibillities...
A devious mind could make some money here.. Say you "lost" your purse, with your wallet, cards and checkbook.... and someone "found" it.. They could withdraw quite a bit, and as long as you called the bank and told them you had lost the card, you would be on the hook for what?? $50 bucks??.. If they were disguised enough to be unrecognizable, Diebold WOULD probably be on the hook...

.. <------watches too many crime shows:)

5. ATM + CMU = Windows Media Player
Some students at a university hacked a Diebold ATM and installed Windows XP. Hard to use the numeric keyboard with it though.

6. WHY, oh WHY
did you not withdraw it all? Or at least as much as you could?

When I was in college my roommate's account all of a sudden showed the balance of a little over 15 grand. We thought it was a bank fuckup, went to the bank the next day, and got it all out in cash, and spent it within 3 weeks (New Year's Eve in NYC -- limo, fancy hotels, etc).

It later turned out that his mom was doing some stock-related transaction and using his account, on which she was a co-signer.

8. The thought crossed my mind
but, remember, I checked my account through my bank's website and not only did they have the correct balance, and they already had recorded the $80 I had just withdrawn.

7. I once had something like that happen with a mac machine
and it turned out to be some sort of glitch...so report it
and keep the receipt.

9. Update
Closer inspection of the receipt I was given showed that the line where the last 4 digits of your card number are printed did not match the last 4 digits of my ATM card. The withdrawal amount was correct.

I called US Bank to let them know their machine was out of whack and was told I must have picked up a receipt someone else had left. No, this was the receipt that was churned out of the machine when I competed my transaction - right after the money was spit out. Well, the person I spoke to sighed and said they'd look into it.

A second check of my own account still shows everything looking correct.

I think I'll send a nasty email to Diebold and ask them how I can trust their voting machines when their ATM's are screwy.

10. Hmm,
You know making all of these different machines must be hard for Diebold. Why not just simplify the whole thing? Instead of choosing english or spanish at the atm you just choose a candidate and for every $100 you withdraw your candidate gets one vote. Diebold democracy in action!
