talking to a stoned teenager Eric Alterman on Dennis Miller Show
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 04:54 PM by otohara
Since my hotel here in Santa Monica does not get CNBC, I remain among the category of the vast majority of my fellow countrymen and women who have never seen the Dennis Miller show. So I don’t know how it looked to its miniscule audience. There is a description here, however.
Anyway, what was so weird about it was how professional it seemed until I finally sat down with Miller. It was set up long in advance by the book’s publicists. The car came on time. In my dressing room, which was pretty elaborate as such things go, I met with a series of staff members who informed me that Dennis would be wanting to discuss topics such as George Soros and the funding of 527s; whether Bush was exploiting the 9/11 families, and I forget what else, just like a real talk show. Then I go out there and what? I’m talking to a stoned teenager, who can’t be bothered to say more than, “Whoh, man, you are so totally screwed up. Like, you really believe that stuff, dude?” I paraphrase, but really, Dennis did not say much more than that. Everyone on staff was extremely apologetic afterward and the word “unprofessional” was used over and over.

6. He hit the nail on the head...a stoned teenager.
Too bad, Miller isn't as innocent as that.

His whole purpose is to mock the left. Next he'll be sticking his fingers in his ears and saying LaLaLaLaLa...I can't HEAR you....LaLaLaLa.

2. I loved this comment
"And speaking of Cheney, did you know that he received four 2-S draft deferments -- granted to students -- from 1963 through 1965 while he was a student at the University of Wyoming. He married Lynne in 1964, and was thus banned from the draft.

But in October 1965, the Selective Service announced that married men without children could then be drafted. Exactly nine months and two days later -- on July 28, 1966 -- his first child was born. Cheney hadn't waited until her birth before he sought a 3-A deferment classification -- given to those with dependents. He did so when Lynne was only 10 weeks pregnant."

7. thats great - I ran across this today
I just rewatched Alterman on Dennis Miller through the above link. I was in the audience of the Miller show yesterday, so I saw the whole thing live. I found Alterman to be quite articulate and correct about what he was talking about. Dennis Miller was a complete Asshole, to him as you can see by watching the clip yourself
http://homepage.mac.com/duffyb/iMovieTheater127.html
I didnt get to see him on The Daily Show, but he seems like a very intelligent and thoughtful person. Any body disagree with anything he said on the Miller clip.
Dennis Miller is a former liberal comedian turned whore. Thats what you call someone who changes there opinons for The big payday. The only problem is that his show wont last. Did you know that The Dennis Miller show pays people to be in its audience. Thats right. I went down there with my girlfriend yesterday, saw the taping and we got paid $30. Not only that They just called me and asked me to go back again for another taping today. I think there having Richard Perle on today. They use a company called SRO productions to hire people to watch the whoring. I wont be going back today (although it might be fun to go just to boo perle.

13. Holy Shit! I heard Miller was bad but I wasn't prepared for how bad!
My god that man is a complete and utter fool. And a rude and ignorant fool to boot. Just when you think he couldn't be more of a fucking jack ass he sure surprises you. Alterman was exceptional and deserves a lot of credit for not punching Miller in the head.

It's like watching a car wreck or something. Pathetic and kind of sad.

Alterman handled it quiet well though. Never stoop to their level.

9. Watched it yesterday just for a laugh
and ended up just being stunned at Miller's complete idiocy. I didn't laugh once. The rest of the show was equally as bad as the Alterman segment, every joke fell flat and his timing is horrible. It's amazing that Miller used to be called the thinking man's comic.

12. DM Has a 0.1 Rating !

The Dennis Miller show is the lowest rated show in cable news, it does a
0.1 rating. If it goes any lower they wont even be able to measure it.

O'Reilly is #1 with a 2.0 rating. He gets about 2 million viewers a night. While
Miller gets about 100,000 viewers a night.

I watched part of it one time, it was terrible. Now they have an audience, and
I think it might be worse now.

18.  What a joke...

<It's amazing that Miller used to be called the thinking man's comic>

Yeah that was before he became the right's whore.I'm curious does he still do the schtick with the obscure pop culture references? I'd figure DM would have to ditch that if he's pandering to the right, as they're not know for their intelligence.

14. "no guest scheduled"
for Miller's show according to CNBC's "Todays Guests" page.

Every other show on the channel lists the days topic and guests, however.

Miller is going to implode real soon. The pressure is too much for him. He's realized he's in way over his head.

19. I saw it and I was embarassed for the people who pitched Miller to the
network execs as a credible host. He had nothing to add other than simple statements of denial while Alterman dismantled him with facts and figures. I believe Miller was out of his league and he knew it so he reverted back to high school tactics of trying to belittle which didnt work with Alterman who simply said "is that all you got?"

It was entertaining though. Watching Alterman totally dissect Miller and cut conservative drivel to pieces while Miller sat there looking like a ill prepared fool.

20. that was appalling
Just watched the clip. Believe me, I have no illusions about Dennis Miller, but even I was stunned at his complete unprofessionalism, his rude behavior, his.....how you say in America? - Assholishness?
What a jerk.
I don't know how Alterman could have handled it any better, and I'm not sure anyone could been as composed as he was as Miller sat there berating and mocking him.
Horrendous behavior on Miller's part.
