what the fuck is a 'war on terror'? How the hell can you have a war on an emotion? Perhaps a better phrase might be "the war on terrorism" then again that's pretty inane as well, as it describes a war on a particular action....not those who are engaging in that action or those who made it possible. This leaves us with the most rational option, "the war on terrorists" which is a dangerously ambiguous, relative phrase that can be applied at the users convenience. If indeed we are involved in something as grave as war is it to much to ask that those who have declared it at least tell us who the fuck we are fighting? You know...like the 'war against Al Qaida' or the 'war against the IRA' a tangible entity, so to speak. How the fuck can ones success or failure in fighting a war against something intensionally described in ambiguous terms be gauged....IT CAN'T...AND THAT FOLKS, IS THE WHOLE IDEA!!!

13. I can see that the WOT bothers you as much as it does me.

I saw the "Big Dog" speak at a college last year and he talked about Al Qaeda and how you cannot run around trying to kill them because this is not a country, but an ethos.

It was an excellent speech and remember, even if we kll 99% of Al Qaeda, it only took 19 of them to take down the WTC.

The WOT is a joke, a sad, miserable, faulty joke.

and what pisses me off even more than the phrase itself is those who validate it by using it or acknowledging those who do, with anything less than the derision they deserve. The meme "the war on terror" is a machination of Mr. Rove, who recognizes a public who fears a vague but terrible enemy is a public who will ask few questions and require of themselves and their government little accountability. Hence AWOLS gleeful proclamation that he had "hit the trifecta" finally he could role this little gem out....and declare what is, in effect a kinder gentler sort of eternal martial law.

I'd ask the members of DU to avoid using this term...and to castigate those who do. It is a trap....don't fall for it.

As to your very valid point that it required only 19 Al Qaida terrorist to take down the WTC and knock a big hole in the side of the Pentagon...I'd like to add that these 19 didn't use anthrax, botulism, Nucs, mustard gas, guns or slingshots...they used BOX CUTTERS for christs sake! BOX CUTTERS!!! What the hell is all this noise about terrorists trying to acquire WMD's? THEY DON'T NEED WMD's as they have rather successfully demonstrated.

I have a dual boot OS, XP and Mandrake-Linux. I use Linux 99% of the time. I cannot vote in any CNN poll with Linux, I have to boot out and go into Windows to vote. I get "Site Forbidden" error. Does anyone else here run Linux and have a similar problem? Or is it that I have written them some very scathing letters in recent weeks and am 86'd. ?
