Police make concessions on "pens" for NYC demo
from CODEPINK:

3) POLICE MAKE CONCESSIONS ON PENS The police and mayor's offices have been inundated with calls and faxes urging the police to not use their barricades to pen people in. Today we learned that the police have made important changes in their plans: While they will still use the barricades, we believe they will not be as oppressive as in previous protests. For instance, we will now be able to use the whole width of Madison Ave., and the sides of the pens will have some openings in order to make it easier for people to come and go. We still are opposed to the use of pens at this, or any, demonstration and we hope that these modifications in their use and our ongoing work to end the use of pens, will lead to further changes in the future.

1. Where will the pens be set up for Bush supporters?
I think, for everybody's safety, they shouldn't be allowed in our out of their hotels or the convention site without being strip searched.

7. This is about this weekend's peace rally...
I jumped to the same conclusion. Nevertheless, this weekend activity will, indeed, be a warmup to the fall republican convention, and you are right, pen management goes both ways.

2. Good.
I assume police forces around the country are scared of another Seattle where innocent small retailers, already under assault from large corporations, were forced to bear the brunt of the protestors' rage.

I come from small retailers and I know the calamity of having to replace plate glass windows. The merchants of New York haven't recovered from 9/11. Check the empty storefronts you pass as you march.

3. How worried are you of another Miami?
where peacefull protestors were herded like cattle to the killing (ok, ok...mace and rubber bullet) floor?

4. I don't think NYC
can afford to be so blatant.
Also, remember Miami is Jeb's territory.
Of course, they will also be testing the waters for the RNC.
