Is Colin Powell's resignation the key to Bush's coming downfall?

I am listening to Ray Taliaferro this morning and he thinks that there is more to Powell's pending resignation than just spending more time with his family. That he could have been disillusioned with Bush's mishandling of Iraq. The fact Bush and Co. made Powell lie before the UN Security Council played a big factor in this. This could contribute to Bush's downfall. Any have their take on this?

1. The way they are handling it is to SAVE Bush's butt.

With a resignation on the table 1.5 years down the road.......they have made the State Department basically moot. And that's what they wanted to do. Nullify the State Dept. It's like a lame duck. They have their list of problem agengies......and are ditching them one by one. "DHS with the Pentagon can really take care of everything!"

The FEWER agencies there are, the more power Bush has. The less power the existing agencies have, the more power Bush has.

This move is to EMPOWER Bush to work to keep his coveted stolen seat.

They are touting Condi or Wolfowitz to head up the State Department (god forbid).

They were also touting Wolfowitz to head the CIA (but that was before Tenet screwed Bush and Tenet kept his standing and job).

By kind of moving Condi around...talking about it.....they are just keeping her moving to deflect the problem with the "16 words."

13. You can bet that Colin ...

is getting something in return for not bailing out NOW. He will get some cushy job at Carlyle, or some oil company for sticking it out for the term. You know he has had the power to make the bushies* look bad by bailing out. He has stuck it out and even read their lies (except for that one time he let "I'm not reading this, this is bullshit" slip out), in exchange for personal betterment. I'm sure Colin is not going to implicate the boss anymore, he's safe.

We can only hope that that this corrupt regime is brought down before the rats have a chance to jump ship. Even though I like Colin more than anyone else in this corrupt administration, he belongs in jail for carrying out (or assisting) the will of this administration.

2. There is ONE avenue where Colin could faciliate the ousting of Bush...

and that is for Colin to speak out about what is going on.

For the last year, I have had this belief that if ONE really high level person with a conscience would just serve his/her country and spill the beans, our whole democracy could be saved. Kind of the John Dean factor.

And I have always thought Colin would be the one to do it. He *does* have a conscience. He *does* have the goods on BushCo. All he has to do is sing like a canary.

But he just keeps enabling these thugs (and subjecting himself to more and more crimes for which he and the rest of them will most likely be tried, God willing).

I just wish I could spend ONE HOUR with the man. ONE HOUR.

3. Is Powell's son stepping down as head of the FCC as well...?

I find this Powell angle quite interesting. Get as much space from * as you can.

I can't imagine we will ever know the truth...but it does make you think how out of control "this elitist agenda" has gone.

People are seeing through the facacde and connecting the dots on their own since the media is muzzled. I'm sure they know this as well.

4. I believe that moderates of both parties and independents

will be horrified by the prospect of powell leaving, especially when those mentioned as possible replacements are complete nut jobs (wolfowitz and gingrich in particular). I see no way this could benefit the idiot's administration.

I believe Powell once wrote in a book that is was a crime that so many rich kids escaped service in vietnam by skipping the queue for national guard positions that wouldn't go anywhere near combat. Then afterward they would make a big deal about their 'military service'.

8. Don't give Powell the benefit of the doubt.

He lied big time and he stayed. The Bush folks are getting rid of him. They have now made him a non-entity in the administration by announcing his departure so much in advance. I think their plan is to do away with the Secretary of State position or at least make it meaningless. They now have created a vacuum so that they can fill it with their slimy people without any confirmation hearings or public review.

9. All in all, this looks terrible for Bush

Bush is the center piece of Bush's carefully stage mananged charade as a uniter, a "compassionate conservative", to his appeal to moderate voters. Even before he was inaugurated by the Supreme Court he was trotting out Colin before the cameras to establish his credentials.

10. Yes, this will hurt Bush* bady with old-style moderate Republicans

There are a lot of these old-fashioned moderate Republicans in my neighborhood. They are uncomfortable with Bush* and getting more so every day, even though they voted for him in the first place. They have been holding on harder and harder to the idea of Powell as a moderating force. They put a LOT of faith in Powell for some reason that I cannot fathom.

This will be a frightening development for them.

11. No one made Powell lie before the UN Security Council

All he had to do was get up and say this is all bullshit and walk away. Ain't like without his next paycheck he would have been kicked out into the street or something. Jeesh. This guy has money in places where I don't have places. He sold himself like the cheap whore he is for a few pieces of gold. And the asshole would do it again in a minute if the price was right.

As for the question of whether this hurt or helps Bush. I think majority of Bush's base (the Gingrich wing of the party) is very racist so this will help Bush gain votes there. They hate Colin Powell to begin with. He may lose some to those who voted who for him and register as independents. I think it will be a wash for Bush. No net gain or loss.

There is no excuse for Powell. There is an explanation...we were wrong about him from the get-go...he was never what we thought he was.

he wouldn't be timing it for after the next inauguration as if he had always planned to serve just one term. This way does no damage, unless there are people that only would vote for Bush because Powell is SOS. Few, at best.
