I AM old enough to remember the whole VN era. My hubby and his many friends are vets from that time.
I watched Kerry so eloquently speak the truth about the way our country threw our men and boys into a conflict that didn't need to happen. I like how he spoke the truth about what went on BUT he DIDN'T assign direct blame on exploded mentalities of those soldiers who did heinous things to the vietnamese....He put the blame for the atrocities on the ones who sent our men over there in the first place. The blame was with our government first, then the culture, then the training they went throught: KILL KILL
I was enraged at the callers who called to say Kerry was a traitor! I jumped out of bed to call c-span but they cut off the phones extremely quickly and switched to a rehash of BigDickCheney's speech. I then tried to add my comments to a forum on C-span but couldn't find one...I wrote to c-span and complained.
Everysingle thing Kerry spoke of was true. All the soldiers weren't participatory in the more heinous things that went on over there, but many were "urged" to do "stuff". Our government at the time was just like this one now. FULL OF HUBRIS and lacking in any real idea of how a war should be run or won (if necessary which VN was not). The power's that were at the helm, tried to micromanage the conflict in VN. They are doing it again today. The attitude that WE HAVE TO WIN...we are great, we cannot afford to lose ad nauseum..is in play today. If there were any real problems in southeast asia at that time(Cambodia comes to mind), we didn't address them--sorta like we didn't finish the job in Afgahnistan, where many of the REAL terrorists make their home today. I am NOT anti military. I think the spitting on those VN Vets when they came home was abominable. The people were misinformed and overzealous in their antiwar stance...they didn't realize what and who was the bigger problem....some did, most didn't. IT WAS THE US GOVERNMENT and their generals etc.
In short, I'm VERY impressed with what Kerry stood for in those days. I hope he remembers all those sentiments today with our current quagmire in Iraq. I hope he has the intelligence and the ear of the people to know when to take action and when to mind our own business. WAR IS HELL....it should NEVER be entered into lightly or without the full support of assests and the will of the people. Well Done JK!
