On the same night Richard Clarke spilled the beans on President Chimpy. Do you think Rove had anything to do with it? (just kidding)

he was a very bad man.

I think Israel was stupid to do what they did.

Ever since bush took office he has ignored this issue, and refused to pursue the negotiations where Clinton left off.

This makes of a very uncertain future, and is more reason why we need Kerry

7. It really does seem to be such a coincidence
to be happening yesterday , doesnt it? I mean there was no provocation , nothing leading up to it, no bombings that day??? Ive always been skeptical of these conspiracy posts but this is a really strong coincidence that seems to have only one reason for its timing. Am I wrong? Maybe but you would have to show me some counter reasons for its timing to sway me away from this opinion.

24. You have your opinion
and thats fine. Like I said I was never on board with the conpiracy theorists if you have read any of my posts but the timing and the fact that nothing had happened that day make me suspicious. Israel always counters suicide bombings almost immediately so ..why yesterday? What happened yesterday that was significant other than Clarkes 60 minutes beatdown of Bush.

25. Maybe they just had the right intelligence
They've tried to get him before and missed. To me, it sounds like they just found out where he was and took a shot at him. Usually he was hiding somewhere. It's not like they could have gone and arrested him anytime they wanted.

I think this situation is not unlike Pres. Clinton's attempt to take out Bin Laden with the cruise missiles. Except, of course, we missed.

in the wider western world now to assasinate "terrorists" (btw the quotation marks here are not in reference to Yassin - I'm not buying into anything Israel/Palestinian outside the I/P forums - just that extra-judicial executions aren't such a great idea in my opinion because in the wider world who decides who's a terrorist - the US has released over 100 inmates from Guantanamo after admiting they did nothing wrong, imagine if they'd assasinated them - just repeating I'M NO FAN OF YASSIN'S just don't beleive in this action)

Israel has followed this policy for a while but it's usually been smaller fry - recent events have meant they knew that this would be viewed as OK by most of the leaders of the western world - it's not anything to do with "intelligence" they always knew where he was

is totally out of control and is going to do whatever he wishes, whether or not the timing is good for W.

If Gore was in the WH, there probably would be a peace treaty by now and at the least Sharon would never even tried this crap, no less get away with it.

21. No doubt Sharon
is a pretty bad guy. But if you think there would be a peace treaty with Gore in the WH, I've got a bridge to sell you.

Clinton made peace in I/P the key to his last year in office. What makes you think Arafat would have made peace with Gore instead after he rejected Clinton's plan?

And why exactly is going after the leader of a terrorist organization crap? Do you think the US shouldn't go after Bin Laden? What exactly is the difference.

I do agree that the timing is not very good and that practically speaking, this will not be helpful to anyone, Israeli or Palestinian.

33. First of all if Gore was in the WH
he was have continued the peace process that Clinton had worked so hard to accomplish. Peace negotiations are delicate things that don't get resolved over night. Yes, there were still differences to work out and Arafat was grandstanding but Gore would have brought the players back to the table and I do believe he would have finalized a peace agreement.

However, in December 2000 when Clinton made his last ditch efforts to come to an agreement, both sides knew that Bu$h would be the next president. Barak was facing an eliciting in Israel and the for numerous reasons the whole thing fell apart. If Gore was to be the next president, there would have been much greater incentives for both sides to reach an agreement. Instead, with Bu$h came in with his ABC policy, the Israeli's knew that they know longer had to make any concessions and that the Bu$h administration did not support the peace process.

As for Sharon killing the leader of Hamas, bad as he may be, assassinating the spiritual and political leader of your opponents will not solve any problems and will only make matters worse. Arrest him, put him on trial for his crimes, fine. But Sharon crossed the line and killing a people's leaders will only create more death and destruction not less.

Do you remember the part where Arafat walked out and declared an intifada instead of even expressing a willingness to negotiate? Gimme a break. Incentives to reach an agreement? What could be a bigger incentive than peace?

45. Even though Arafat walked out at Camp David
Negotiations continued and an agreement was almost reached in Jan. 2001 at Taba, Egypt.

This is the statement negotiators made after Taba, just days before Barak lost the election to Sharon:

"The two sides declare they have never been closer to reaching an agreement and it is our shared belief that the remaining gaps could be bridged with the resumption of negotiations following Israeli elections."

Of course, no Americans attended the meetings in Eygpt, since the Bu$h WH wasn't interested in finishing anything that Clinton would get credit for. Within a couple of days, Ariel Sharon won the election in Israel and he had no interest in making peace with the Palestinians either. But that's right it's all Arafats fault.

Both major American political parties pretty much offer unconditional support for Israel (rightly or wrongly - that's a debate for I/P) and Israel has utilised assasination whilst a Democrat was in the White House

26. This is a high risk strategy, however
Remember Aytaollah Khomieni in Iran preached the virtues of martydom for 60 years and he and his family died in bed with there boots off. Sadam was going too have everybody fight to the last man, but when it was his turn he fled and ran and tried to negotiate when they fished him from his hidey hole. remember khaddafi he was very brazen about terrorisim until We put a smart bomb right through his tent. After that he had too get one last say over lockerbie when he did not think anyonewas looking. Now Usa invades Iraq and he voluntarily gives up his wmd program, and cooperates. Lok at Osama glorifying martrydom but now running around the mountains doing every thing he can to avoid his turn, same Zawahiri. Look at Arafat another 70 year old martydom proponent. He is aparently a billionare stealing money from his own people. do you think that is the signature of someone who wants too be a martyr. Granted there are a lot of low level mad men who for the forseeable future will volunteer for suicide duty. But, the mad men in charge don't seem too be quite that mad and they have thier own agenda.I think targeting the higher ups may be the answer. We will have to wait and see.

27. Israel released Yassin in a prisoner exchange (1997)
Edited on Mon Mar-22-04 01:39 PM by Oaf Of Office
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu persuaded Jordan's King Hussein to agree to the swap, and last week Israel freed 20 prisoners, including Hamas' founder and spiritual father, Sheik Ahmed Yassin.

Israel has promised to free as many as 50 more in an attempt to soothe ruffled feelings after the assassination attempt soured relations with Jordan and Canada -- the agents used fake Canadian passports -- and brought a firestorm of criticism down on Netanyahu.

"From time to time, we have to pay a price for something which you had to do," Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai said Monday. "I think we are not going to release any Hamas (activists) which would be dangerous."

Terror vs. terror, is what we have here. Hamas suicide bombers do not discriminate, when it comes to killing women & children, as do the Israeli's. Now the Zionist target the handicapped! I guess Hamas will kill more Israeli's and leave some handicapped, only to kill them later. Both sides are surely "Dogs of Doom." And their intelligence should be given a handicapped zone!!
