"How am I a closet Democrat? I'm racist, I love guns and I hate welfare"
Edited on Mon Aug-04-03 12:10 PM by RedSox02
I just stumbled upon this gem of an article on Salon.com about the recent College Republicans convention in D.C. http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2003/07/28/bush/index.html

The quote in the title is real, one of these kids actually said it and was dead serious. This is a real interesting look into the types of characters that attended this convention. To read it all you'll need to either be a Salon subscriber, or get one of their free day passes which you just have to view an add to get so it's pretty easy. Either way it's a great read. I also like a part where a young French Conservative invited to the convention wonders why everyone is praying out loud before meals and says "This puzzles me, religion is private".

4. They are such hypocrites
For example, these two sets of quotes from that article:

"As conservatives, we don't hate America," Paul Erickson told his young audience. "The life of a liberal is hell. It is not possible to have a debate, a discussion, with someone who at their root, at their core, hates everything this country stands for but doesn't hate it enough to leave."

"I'm a Republican because liberals make me sick," said Chris Sibeni, spitting out the words. "I don't like whiny people and tree-huggers."

Jack Abramoff, a powerful right-wing lobbyist and former College Republican chairman, who exhorted the next generation to fight hard, lest "the ascension of evil, the bad guys, the Bolsheviks, the Democrats return."

Nope, they don't hate America, just the half of the people in the country who consider themselves Democrats. And in particular they hate blacks. Wow, these people are disgusting.

And check out this ode to personal responsbility: "All four of them believe they have lost opportunities to affirmative action. "I applied to NYU and I didn't get in," says Sibeni. "My SAT scores weren't the greatest ..." "
