....which might be why he isn't toeing the line for the W regime.

I am suspecting he will run for the GOP nomination in 2008. But given his apparent disloyality he might not get support and lose. Which would be too bad as (even though I disagree with him politically) he has the character and intelligence to be President.

Hagel is involved in the voting machine mess as a former head of ES&S who still owns stock in the company via another investment company, headed by his campaign chairman, that he conveniently didn't disclose.

Hagel was chums with Bush 1, and there is speculation that Bush 1 sent him to Nebraska to head up ES&S.

This is a classic example of "good cop/bad cop." Hagel can afford to look a bit different from the neo-con crowd. Hagel is the backup to Jeb for the next election in 2008.

10. Lugar's a decent guy, but he is a Republican

We need a Democrat to make judicial appointments. Lieberman is a good Democrat in that regard.

What you're seeing I believe is that Lugar and perhaps Hagel (whom I don't know so well) are foreign policy realists. That's not where Lieberman is coming from. It's a real weakness of his, and it shows on all sides.

A. I don't think people are any less human for holding stupid opinions--on the contrary.

B. I draw a distinction between conservative foreign policy realists like Dick Lugar, and crusading neocon psychopaths like we have in the current administration. I don't believe the latter truly reflect Republican Party ideology--certainly not for the majority of people who vote for Lugar.

I think the way to convince Hoosiers and other Republicans that they need to make better choices is to maintain a sharp distinction between farright wackos like * and moderates like Lugar.

13. Biden's not a bad guy...

Even though he lets Bush off a little easy. Though, I can't help but thinking he LOVES to hear himself talk. He looks like he has an ego.

I am through with Lieberman. I will never defend him again, and will even donate $ in '06 to unseat him in the primaries. His dismissal of Clarke's statement was the last straw.

Hagel's connection with various electronic voting systems makes me a bit nervous, but I get the impression that he does have SOME principles and is willing to tow the party line every once in a while at least. It's also interesting to note that he endorsed McCain in the primaries. I wouldn't vote for either of them in a GE, but as far as republicans go, they're some of the reasonable ones.
