I predict that Clarke's new book will be a huge bestseller
I was in an airport bookstore in Washington D.C. this morning and saw the book on display. When I went to the cash register to buy a copy, I asked if he'd sold any others so far. (It went on sale today.) The clerk said that he'd only JUST put the books on the shelf, and that I was the first one to buy a copy. BUT that four other people had asked him just before me if he had any copies yet because they wanted one. He himself said he couldn't wait to read it. Then I boarded the plane to Portland Maine and two rows back, there was a lady also reading the book!!! First day of sale, and two of us in the same (small) plane reading it.

I've worked in publishing awhile, and always stop in to talk to clerks at airport bookstores. I will tell you that this is a very good predictor of a book's success.

btw, I'm halfway through it already. Very interesting stuff. I'm surprised by how Clinton comes off looking VERY effective and smart in this book.

1. Bought it today. Bookstore said it was flying off the shelves.
So much for Hannity at number 1. The Bush Orcs are tearing this guy a new one. More to come.

2. Clinton was effective
And his record proves it. I believe the book will hit number one in the first weeks. This is why the bash admin is so adamant of nipping this in the bud before it blows up. Too late.

7. yes he was
He had the plans for bombing Al Qaida bases ready but didn't go through with it because of the 2000 election. He then handed the plans to Bush and made it very clear that Al Qaida was a serious threat and must be dealt with. Bush and Condi Rice dropped the ball big time on this one.

More and more people are realizing that Clinton was tough on defense and Bush is not.

4. NYT lists
I just posted this on another thread - just as a point of information, you won't know HOW high this gets on the list until another two and a half weeks.

The NYT list will be announced to industry insiders next weds. afternoon, and the list will be posted on the NYT website the Saturday evening after that.

We'll know just how high clarke's book made it in about 12 days. It'll be in the print version of the NYT book review section in about 19 days.

5. But some of Clarke's book is pissing me off on the press
Like the memorial to the Pan Am victems. Clinton goes out to do the first shovel thing and is helped by a little boy that lost his father and Clinton whispers to him something like, I lost my father too, be good to your mother. And Clarke remembers that night on the news is a picture of Clinton walking out and the talking heads talking about something some Ark. state troops had said, and never did they talk about the Pan Am memorial.. Grrrrrrrrr

6. I thought that was a really touching moment
it actually brought a tear to my eye. It reminded me of just how deft Clinton was on a personal level. It also galls me to think of how the press (and Congress) were on him about Monica when the REAL danger (Al Qaeda) was being ignored. Republicans in Congress should be lambasted about this!!!! Why the hell were they fixated on sex with interns when 9/11 was being hatched? They deserve the blame just as much as Bush does!

8. Well, if I have anything to say about it, it will.
I'm buying at least two copies, tomorrow or Wednesday, whenever it is that I can crutch my way to the book store. AND John Dean's new book, too, if they have it already. "Worse than Watergate" it's called. Since I'm laid up with foot surgery, might as well get some reading done...

11. "Clinton comes off looking VERY effective and smart in this book."
You know it's coming. Some repukes will say that Clinton paid Clarke to make him look good and Bush* look bad. I'm predicting a cspan caller will say this.
