My Right-Wing Argumentative Bush Supporting Friend Has Seen the Light!

My fiance's father and I often get into at gatherings. He is a staunch Republican and Bush supporter. He has maintained that he supports Bush because of his stand on terrorism and he supported wholeheartedly Bush's decision to go into Iraq.

Last night he told me that "you know, you and I aren't too far apart anymore." When I asked what he meant he said that the 60 Minutes interview with Clarke opened his eyes.

He said he can no longer support Bush (although he doesn't particularly like Kerry). I told him we would talk again later on and I'll convince him.

One more Republican not voting for Bush. We can make a difference, one voter at a time.

We need to be like that psychologist character Al Franken plays (Stuart Smalley?--yeah, that's it) and assure Republicians that it's "OKAY" (to me, he says that in capital letters) not only to feel disillusion/disgust with the Bush regime, but to vote Democratic perhaps for the very first time in their lives. That's what's such an unexpected blessing about Howard Stern's "conversion"--he's "preaching" to the very people who need to hear our "sermon" the most!

I know a lot of people myself who are just as you described who are now saying negative things about bush. However, I would place good, solid, betting money on the fact that those same people will end up pulling the lever or pushing the button for him in November, disgusted as they may be with some of the things he did. I'm sorry but that is just a cold hard truth that I have trouble shaking.

I have a couple of RW friends who are pretty disenchanted with Georgie (mainly for the economy), and they have said they are considering "other options."

These people need our positive reinforcement that they're doing the right thing. If the facts about the Bush regime are laid out to them, they won't be able to deny that Kerry is the most fit candidate. And not voting at all won't solve anything.

That is great news!

I know how surprised, happy and relieved I was when I found out that my dad (staunch Repub, voted for Goldwater in 64, etc) did not support the war in Iraq.

I think the Repubs that have a sense of morality are starting to get very uncomfortable.....

6. I think your argument to convince hims should go like this

Tell him not voting shouldn't be an option he should consider. Tell him since every vote counts he can consider that he is not voting for one person as much as he is voting against another. Tell him that a vote against Bush is not an endorse of the democrat party but a vote against his (Bush) irresponsible policies and it is meant to send him a message of displeasure with his performance.

A Dem friend of mine there just reported that her Repuke brother and sister had stopped trying to defend * and were no longer saying they'd vote for him. He's even losing supporters in *Houston*.

that's one less voting for Bush*, but will he really vote for Kerry in November? I hope so. I have a republican friend who will vote for Bush*, almost no matter what, in spite of the truth. Why? Because he doesn't think that Bush* will lose. That's the mentality we're dealing with. That's a scary thought! :scared:

24. In my Repub. city, seems like the popular sentiment is now anti-Bush

I always try to bring up Bush or Iraq when I'm at the pool or at Happy Hour. Every time I bring him up - the response has been negative. In addition, people have been "chiming in" saying negative things about him. I don't hear one person sticking up for him. This is in a ultra-Republican area.

I honestly don't know where they're coming up with these people who are pro-Bush in the polls.

I notice a lot of people are listening to our conversations also. I think that this is one of the best ways to "bring people over." When they start to hear their friends and neighbors saying these things that has to have some impact. Right now I only know of 3 people who seem to be Bush supporters and they are a little embarrassed/sheepish about it.

Just ran into a neighbor who I assumed was a Repub. (he's an older "affluent" man). He told me he had been a life-long Repub. until the Clinton impeachment. He was so disgusted bu that that he switched over to the Dem Party.

One of my rw colleagues has now joined your father-in-law. This guy is a libertarian who didn't really care for *, but thought he was closer to his ideology than any Democrat. WRONG! Thanks to that 60 Minutes interview, he said he just cannot vote for *. He said he wished there was a third-party candidate, at which point I jumped and said that a vote for any other candidate is a vote for bush. Count another one for Kerry!

who aren't voting for Bush. Even one guy at work who was a Bush lover and said he was turned around by Paul O'Neill's book. And many Republicans who are against invading countries who haven't done anything to us, like Iraq, and are worried about where we'll go next. I do make it a point to ask the war supporters when their kids are signing up.

is the problem, not just GWB or the Bush Family. The GOP has been taken over by fascists and even if they kicked out every Bush and every Bush crony, another group of dictatorial-minded people would take over. The problem is that people who think they are conservatives value obedience above open-mindedness and are just sheep waiting to be led to mindcontrol. (apologies for the mixed metaphor--I can't think of anything better because I've only had one cup of coffee)
