Opposition to Haiti's PM attending Caricom meeting

Latortue, who unilaterally declared a suspension of Haiti's membership in Caricom on March 15 and declared as "an unfriendly act" Jamaica's hosting of ousted President Jean-Betrand Aristide, is now seeking to attend the March 25-26 Inter-Sessional Meeting of Community leaders in St Kitts.
For his part, Prime Minister Bird, who is scheduled to assume the chairmanship of Caricom at the Inter-Sessional Meeting which begins on Thursday, said "once my party is re-elected to office at (today's) election, and I have no intention of presiding at the Caricom meeting with Latortue in attendance until we settle, on a matter of principle, the issue of recognition of a government in Haiti in view of how President Aristide was ousted from office..."
Gonsalves, who chairs five-member Prime Ministerial Working Group on "Options for Governance" in Caricom, that also includes Prime Minister Patrick Manning, said he also "has a serious problem with an official of the Organisation of American States sharing a platform with Latortue at what was a political rally in Gonaives".
This was a reference to the OAS representative, David Lee, who along with members of Latortue's recently appointed cabinet were flown with the interm Prime Minister on a United States military helicopter to Gonaives for the rally where he welcomed as "liberators" armed rebels who had fought for the overthrow of the Aristide presidency.
Prime Minister Anthony of St Lucia told the Express that he was puzzled that Latortue would want to be facilitated with a meeting of the Community's Heads of Government this week without "any public repudiation" of his previous statements pertaining to both his recall of Haiti's ambassador to Jamaica, and his surprised announcement of the suspension of Haiti's membership in Caricom.
