What I saw was the entire royal family (King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, Prince Felipe, Felipe's fiance, Princess Elena, Elena's husband, Princess Cristina, and her husband) giving their condolences to the families of the victims. They were going up the center aisle of the large cathedral and then around to the side aisles to shake hands with and kiss the family members (hundreds of them) in every pew, stopping to talk with some of them. Cristina and her husband were crying, and the king, queen, and Princess Elena looked very pained. Either they're very good actors, or they really feel compassion. I was impressed. They seem to understand their duty. The people seemed to appreciate the gesture.
Unfortunately, I couldn't help thinking about the 9/11 families and the stonewalling of the 9/11 commission, the unrecorded arrivals of caskets at Dover, and the fact that Bush has just now met with a few families of the Iraq war dead and a few of the wounded -- now that the election campaign has started.
