2. Ask the Chinese.

Anyone remember how Bush* bravely negotiated while the Chinese illegally held Americans? I do. I firmly believe that this provided some motivation to al-Queda, and gave them the confidence to pull off 9-11. That's my view, anyway.

* isn't an appeaser. He is a garden variety coward. I don't necessarily object to cowards - unless they try to play tough.
