I called * "the antichrist" and got the Principal's office in my 40's!

I was marooned in Houston at the time, and * had just defeated Ann Richards for Governor of Texas. At the breakfast table, I looked at the morning paper and on seeing *'s victorious said, "AAAAIIIEEE! It's the antichrist!" which my oldest boy (then 8 years old) thought hysterically funny.

He thought it was SO funny, that in his class that morning, when *'s election was proudly brought up by his wingnut teacher (a contradition in terms if I ever heard it), he cheerfully piped up, "My Dad says George Bush is the antichrist!"

Later that day, I get a call waking me up (I was working nights) to come in to talk to his teacher and Principal IMMEDIATELY for a very serious problem. I race over to find out that they want to scold me about my opinions.

I responded that my opinions were mine to hold, and that as an adult, voting, taxpayer, they had no right to restrict them or me as long as I didn't suggest something violent or obscene. They responded that my comments were sacriligeous, and I responded that this was a public school and not a church, and the last time I checked nobody had any right to restrict my speech in my house.

Then I said that if they wanted to get picky, I thought what was obscene was that George Bush was now the Governor with the power of life and death. I related my story about meeting him at "Taste of Houston" in a couple of years earlier and finding him drunk, telling dirty and racist jokes. At which point they started to sputter and stammer, so I bid them good day and left. I never heard another word about it.

All I remember about the scene was that his tie was loose, he waved his drink like a drunk, and slurred some words.

The joke had something to do with Hispanic women. I try not to catalogue jokes that crass. He did get quite a laugh out of the group around him.

I only got introduced because I wore my tux that night. It makes it easier to hide in formal groups.

I didn't get to Houston before May of 1987, and it was at least a year after that. It could have been 1989.

I only got in because I'd worked on a charity gig the month before. Got me a free ticket (admission was about $200 as I recall, and was for charity also).

Nope, just me and the young turks. Besides, I only remember him because he was so outrageous. I was very chemically relaxed at the time, but I didn't laugh at the joke.

Called me in and was "concerned" about my daughter. so concerned, in fact, that he wanted to strongly suggest that I have her speak to "our pastor"...

I told him that not even when I had her in a Catholic grade school, were the administration so intrusive about what went on in MY home, and that "Even though it's none of your business, I feel compelled to tell you that *I* am an Atheist, and we don't belong to any church, and have NO pastor for her to talk to..."

Sumbitch quit at the end of that year and went to work for a Baptist school.
