Clarke wants to sell books....
if that is what you numbnuts on the right think, then you people are insane.

Who would WANT to bring on the wrath of the rightwing attack machine?

Clarke just blasted the shit out of the Bush argument for going to war in Iraq.

1. I hope he sells one hell of a lot of books
It is the only way an alternative viewpoint can possibly be heard in this country.

15. I did my part!
Buzzflash has it now and I'm sure your locally-owned bookstore does too!

If you are nearly broke, Costco is selling it for $14.99.

2. They are having a hard time with this one
He's a registered Republican! Poppy Bush hired him! Reagan hired him! W hired him!

He just swore under oath that he has no interest in working on the Kerry campaign or in the Kerry Administration!

Now what will they do? Plant some crack on him?

4. The best response to this that I've seen:
Works for any type of argument that tries to smear the messenger:

"O.K. let's say you're right and all he wants to do is sell books. Show me where he's lying. Show me where his allegations are false."

It nicely puts the argument back where it belongs, on the facts...

6. Tell the bigmouths to try suing Clarke if they think he's lying.
Will ONE Republican DARE to try suing Clarke for libel?

They should PUT UP OR SHUT UP.

7. Let's hope the previous Clarke contradictions don't override his current
statements. It looks like the right is gathering all his previous interviews and statements that contradict his latest testimony and is preparing to swamp the media with them. This could spell disaster for Clarke if the public gets to hear it and latches on to it.

Let's hope CBS and others don't report on these contradictions.

11. They asked about those so-called 'contradictions' at the hearing today...
...If you are referring to the bullshit that Faux News tried to bring up about the Aug 2002 'interview' with Clarke.

Clarke responded that he was asked to give a 'backgrounder' to the press by several White House officials, and that he was asked to accentuate the positive aspects of the Bush administration's efforts, and minimize the negative aspects. Being the Republican staffer that he was at that point (he was IN the administration at the time, remember), he complied, and did just that in the off-the-record interview.

I don't think anyone should worry about this 'getting reported on', since it is already, and has been answered already. In fact, I think the Bush juggernaut made a huge mistake even bringing it up, since it's clear that Clarke was simply carrying water for the Bush admin at that 'interview'.

With the President's credibility as shot as it is, it's very easy to believe this was the case. They spin EVERYTHING.

16. I'd shy away from the carrying water defense
That same claim could be used against him as carrying water now for his book and the defeat of bush. Spoken words that get recorded have a way of coming back to haunt one.

20. Clarke said, UNDER OATH...
...that he would not accept a position in the Kerry administration. Period, end of story on that one.

Carrying water for his book? Ha! The man has 30 years in government service under 4 presidents, most of them Republican. His very widely credited reputation is built upon his honest and the non-partisanship of his analysis. Why the hell would he risk throwing all that away for a friggin book?

As far as carrying water for the defeat of Bush, he also testified, UNDER OATH, that the last time he was asked about his party affiliation, in 2000, he voted Republican, not to mention serving under 3 Republican presidents.

Got any more?

9. He just sold one to me!!
The two local bookstores (Jackson, WY only has two) are both sold out and don't expect to be able to get more for at least two weeks. One bookshop owner said the distributor just laughed when she tried to order more copies earlier today.

Amazon still had some available, though, so I should have it tomorrow. Looking forward to a good read.
