FOX News: Breaking about Transcript
The one Kerrey held up today.

Jim Angle, who was the reporter to release the transcript for FOX, was just on with noted Free Republic supporter and "fair and balanced" anchor Brit Hume. The story is this--and it's not pretty.

The transcript was indeed on "background," which means that FOX could not use Clarke as a named source for the story. In this case, he was referred to as a "senior counterterrorism expert" from the NSC when FOX ran the story in 2002.

So what changed? The NSC, under the supervision of Dr. Bucky Rice, lifted the "background" status on it, thereby making it fair game for FOX, in whatever twisted faux-journalistic ethics they have, to name Clarke's name.

The long and the short of it? The WH and Bucky are behind it. FOX is just appeasing them.

10. FOX released a transcript of Clarke
that seems to contradict much of his book and his testimony before the 9/11 Commission. It was an obvious attempt to discredit Clarke. To his credit, Bob Kerrey today called FOX on this betrayal of ethics and said they should call themselves "occassionally fair and balanced". You can see that here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=109x6657

There are innumerable threads about FOX's revelation--I'm sure drudge is wallowing in it--but it goes through seven points about chimpy's anti-terra efforts since 9/11. The transcript dates from August 2002, IIRC.

11. From a yahoo story
The White House sought anew to undermine Clarke, the author of a recent book critical of the president, identifying him as the senior official who had praised the president's anti-terrorism efforts in an anonymous briefing for reporters the year following the attacks.

This was given to Faux as background material. They weren't supposed to reveal his name.

6. The politicalization of the NSC should be a major scandal in itself
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 06:38 PM by RobertSeattle
The NSC should be full of stone cold analysts - not politcal hacks.

Gee, what next will get politicized, the Supreme Court? ()

Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 06:41 PM by htuttle
How about they do the same thing regarding the administration official who blew CIA operative Valerie Plame's cover by leaking to Bob Novak?

?
