New tactic
Yesterday I had an interesting conversation with one of my staunchly Republican coworkers. Patrick can never be shaken from his Republican ideals and in the past linked those with Bush. The first thing hasn't changed but he no longer can stand Bush. I don't think that he's going to vote in the presidential election. He admitted that he no longer takes in any news. He keeps himself busy with all kinds of stuff. I think he is trying to stay too busy to think about the situation.

Instead of arguing points with the rank and file republicans I think that maybe we ought to commiserate with them as it's too bad that they don't have a candidate that is true to their beliefs. If they don't vote it's almost as good if they vote for Kerry.

1. Looks like the non political very rich are getting like this also.
People like the country to go nice and easy and Bush has turned every thing in to a mess and people do not like it. I see the color codes do not turn up any more but this hearing has got it all on front page. I also read that this has got those people who hop planes to Southern France waiting in line and things like that get to them. It was a funny story but it is true, these are the people who have the money to stop it. It may have been on counter punch.com

2. Tell him why bush is not a traditional conservative
You aren't going to convert him to a liberal. Attack bush from the right instead of the left. When I talk to my RW friends, I talk about how bush is driving up the deficit, how he wants to spend billions going to Mars, and how he wants to legalize all the illegal immigrants.

3. Here's what I don't understand.
In 2000 why didn't the rank and file in the repulsive party allow only one candidate to dominate. When I used to watch Crossfire, no longer have the stomach for it, Novak and Carlson always made fun of the fact that the Democrats had so many candidates to choose from and they made jokes of it. I thought it was great that we had such a broad variety to choose from unlike the repulsive party that had only one candidate pushed down their throats. They had no choice, but yet no one ever thought that to be strange. Evidently these people just don't have a clue.

4. In 2000 the Republicans had their range of candidates.
They held primaries and Bush won. Bush was the candidate that the Republican party voters voted for. They got what they wanted. Nothing was "shoved down their throats". (This argument sounds vaguely familiar, doesn't it?)

8. Winning with Dirty Tricks
As I recall, McCain was trouncing Bush until North Carolina. Then the Bush Dirty Tricks machine went into full force

There is also the problem with the voting systems in our country. Florida predominated the news but we don't know yet how pervasive it was and for how long. Wasn't just the punch cards, an optical scan count garnered a negative 16,022 votes for Gore in Florida. That one was caught, how many weren't? How long was it going on and where was it happening?

Problems with voting systems do not only appear during presidential elections. Could be very handy in the primaries, too. ;-)

5. It's all about cutting their base.
It doesn't matter if they stay home, but it would be better if they voted for Kerry. But getting these nuts to crack is the point. And there is plenty to try to crack them with. You can fight on their issues. Deficits, poor security, blowing immigration doors open, etc.

6. exactly true
another great issue that Dems should be pushing is the huge influence the religious right has in this admin.

There are a whole lot of Republicans who don't know the extent to which the religious right controls the GOP. If they did know they would not necessarily vote for Kerry, but they might just stay home.

7. Good point!
There is no need to elevate the dialog at this point. The line has been drawn. My only comment these days to republican friends is to shake my head and say that anyone who is watching must be disturbed. I most always get a nod of agreement. The smart conservatives in the republican party are waking up from a deep sleep that began with RR.
