Do scouts and churches break child labor laws?
There are 4 women in my office that have children in scouts and or church groups. I am constantly being hit up to buy candy, popcorn etc by their children. They have children going door to door selling this stuff. I dint think having 7 to 9 year old children knocking on doors in strange neighborhoods is very wise.

12. Why is that?

We didn't do this when I was a child. What happened? Have the schools gotten that much more expensive to fund, or did their funding via taxes get cut?

2. No
But the scouts are a discriminatory institution. I would recommend not buying anything from them until such time as they cease their discrimination against gays and atheists.

5. Girl Scouts do NOT discriminate.
Just thought I should point that out. In fact, the fundies were boycotting sales of girl scout cookies this year because the organization refuses to discriminate against lesbian leaders and scouts.

7. Agreed
Girlscouts seems to be a much more inclusive organization. I have nothing for praise for them and buy their cookies all the time. Despite them not being made from real girl scouts.

8. Girl Scouts are a pretty liberal group
I am happy to buy a couple of box of cookies. It's an easy way to support a good organization.

1. the kids are suppose to be with parents at that age
2. 60% of our funding is paid by popcorn sales
3. it's OK to say no thanks

6. What they do isn't working, labor, jobs. It's a volunteer activity.

9. volunteer sales force
Could it also be seen as a corporate abuse of a volunteer sales force. The reason i say this is, who really profits from these sales. Most if not all of the products they sale are produced by major corps.

15. I'm sure the Girl Scouts have the bargaining power to lower their whole-
sale costs, and that there's a huge retail markup, all of which goes to funding their activities.

Anyway, it's not labor. Nobody is making these girls join the scouts, and nobody is even making them sell the cookies.

if you don't want to buy them, just tell the parents that your doctor has told you that you can longer consume partially hydrogenated vegetable oils or you'll probably have a heart attack.

13. Well, they should avoid "strange" neighborhoods, I guess...
I was a Scout and we had a blast canvassing the neighborhoods of my small, NC childhood home- selling "Scout Show" tickets...

As far as cchild labor laws go, I am not opposed to supervised, regulated aprrenticeship type work...

Nothing wrong with developing work skills/ethic early...
