Mystery of tunnels recovery in Azam Warsak
I was wondering what happened to the Pakistan/Al Qaeda story when I ran across this one..

http://www.jang.com.pk/thenews/

Notwithstanding, the myth and mystery about the discovery of the tunnels and channels in South Waziristan Agency, the fact is that the tribesmen constructed the centuries old ‘Karizez’ only to be used for irrigation purpose.

The detection of the mysterious tunnels seems to have been played up by the authorities giving the impression, as if the irrigation channels in Azam Warsak area, where the military operation met with tough resistance from the tribesmen, were in the use of some Arab terrorists. National and foreign media was quick to send alarms across the globe when secretary security Fata Brig (Retd) Mehmud Shah disclosed that about two kilometre long tunnels have been unearthed in Kalusha village and other parts of Azam Warsak.

1. Yes, there is an extensive network of tunnels underneath many US cities...
Usually, though, they are called 'storm sewers'.

2. These tunnels are an ancient Middle Eastern form of irrigation
It's been a while since I read about this, but it seems to me that Tamerlane destroyed a lot of them back around 1400, and Iraq has never recovered. It would be a terrible thing if the US were to do the same thing in those areas where the system is still intact.
