White women - new hope for a Democratic South?

...a new trend may bode well for the Democrats. In recent years, white women have formed winning biracial coalitions, often with a vibrant base of white female support and black female (and black male) support. Indeed, Sens. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Baineaux Blanco may be cutting a new path.

This fall, a few isolated victories could become a genuine trend if South Carolina Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum and former Florida Education Commissioner Betty Castor both win their party's nomination and their states' open Senate seats.

5. True, there are a lot of backward white women in the South

as well as backward white men (and backward Latinos, Asians, Hispanics, et al.). And I've heard there may even be a couple of backward people in other parts of the country as well.

However, the point of the quote was that there may be a glimmer of hope since white female Democrats have won some elections in the South recently. That's all.

She's running a much stronger campaign than expected for Hollings' Senate seat. If a white Democratic woman can win in the most conservative state in the country, there may yet be hope for us.

7. Georgia is underrated

All that happened in 2002 is that the Republicans got organized. Ralph Reed ran a brilliant campaign and the Democrats didn't. Roy Barnes was and is tremendously popular. Cleland too. And there are still a lot of Democrats in Georgia, and an increasing number of them are liberals. We're not going to win Miller's seat in November and Kerry won't carry the state, but Georgia should still be very competitive most cycles.

Sort of like the periodical articles in Rolling Stone about "Women in Rock"--featuring the latest cuties who are "forging new frontiers" or some such poppycock. I've often pictured those writers having their consciousness raised by a visit from Grace Slick & Chrissy Hynde.

Similarly, those who have just discovered Southern Democratic women need to meet Sissy Farenthold, Ann Richards & Molly Ivins.

that most Dem candidates in the South have been white men, and that that seems to be changing, a little bit--not that there's never been a southern white woman in a position of Democratic leadership. And that this trend may be a way for Dems to strengthen their position in the region.

Are you saying that it's wrong to take special note of women in politics (or in rock) rather than just evaluating them as politicians (or musicians)? Or that it's myopic to portray their being in leadership positions as a bold new trend?

Not trying to start a flame war--just trying to understand your position.

I know I tend to find women candidates (of any demographic background) of more interest because I regard women politicians as a) less likely to be corrupt and b) more likely to have something on the ball, since (unless they're Katherine Harris) they probably had to work harder to get where they are than a lot of the good old boys have had to do.

15. Yes, it's just that these writers are a bit slow.

Glad they're catching on, however late. Sort of like the Special Olympics--don't want to discourage them, since they are trying!

I'm glad there are more female candidates but don't necessarily regard them as better than men. My own Senator is Kay Bailey Hutchison! Oh, wait--actually, she is better than her male counterpart--John Cornyn; and she was definitely better than Phil Gramm.

My rep is Sheila Jackson Lee. Not perfect, but she continues to give the Republicans hell. Being black, she's not "news".

11. Join the Democratic Women

In every county organization that I know of in this Southern state, it is the Democratic Women's Club that is the backbone of the party. In this county, registered Democratic women greatly outnumber registered Democratic men - and we vote!!! Black women outnumber white women, but only slightly. I know of quite a few women who have come over from the Republican party because of the right-wing anti-woman views of that party's leaders.

If you want to get involved with a group locally who has really been making a difference for a very long time, then join the Democratic Women. And yes, we don't discriminate against men!!!
