San Diego's republican leadership
Here in San Diego we have this figurehead we like to call "the mayor". All he really does is pretend to be in charge when the county is on fire and casts tiebreaking votes in the city council. the city is actually "run" by a city manager. anyways I wanted to get the input from those of you in really hardcore mayoral run cities like new york or the like regarding this local article.
(btw, keep in mind the mayor was just thrust into a run off with a fellow republican after the primaries, the city manager quit after problems arising from a plundered pension fund and now the mayor suddenly wants more power now that he is being eyed by the feds. san diego is a republican fortress, except for my neighborhood)

Mayor Murphy Asks For More Power

San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy is asking voters to make the mayor -- not the city manager -- San Diego's chief executive officer, 10News reported.

Murphy is proposing a measure for the November ballot that would shift some key responsibilities from the city manager to the mayor's office.

Currently, the city manager has the power to hire and fire department heads and to prepare a budget.

The mayor's push for more power comes as the city faces one of its worst budget shortfalls.

City Manager Michael Uberuaga announced Thursday that the city is facing a budget shortfall of at least $14 million. That does not include the $10 million that he already had to cut in services.

Uberuaga is retiring in two weeks and the city council will vote on his replacement next week.

Murphy has been calling for a change in power since his 2000 campaign. He is not the first mayor to propose a shift in powers. Pete Wilson, Maureen O'Connor and Susan Golding also made similar efforts.

2. Hi, San Diego! I'm in Temecula...
and your mayor makes me angry. I'm a big-time liberal Democrat...and my weakness is football. I would like to see the lovable losers, the Chargers stay in the area, because I'm a season-ticket-holder. He could work out a beneficial deal -- admit it.
