Is the use of "GOP" in headlines bias?
Edited on Fri Mar-26-04 04:47 PM by Woodstock
I saw a headline on Yahoo news "GOP Moves to Declassify Clarke Testimony."

There is no cute equivalent to "GOP" for Democratic party. Often the Democratic party is not even given the equivalent to Republican party, which is Democratic, in sentences; for instance, referrals to a Republican lawmaker and a Democrat lawmaker instead of a Democratic lawmaker.

I say the use of "GOP" shows bias. "Grand Old Party" is a subjective term. "Grand Old Party" moves to declassify Clarke Testimony" has positive connotations - how can a grand old thing do something evil? But they do.

2. No, I don't think it's bias
it's just headline-speak. Shorter is better. They call Democrats "Dems" in headlines.

11. Hadn't noticed the use of Dems on Yahoo, etc.
I like it though. Sounds friendly, accessible, down to earth...

4. I'd be satisfied with the 'Give 'em Hell Party."
GHP (Christians would be upset, though.)

Or...

The Can Do Party (too easily disparaged: Can't Do Party)

CDP

The E Pluribus Unum Party?

EPUP? Just doesn't sound right.

7. Well, you'll typically see "Dem" or "Dems" as shorthand...
but yes I see your point. However, it would be interesting to poll and see how many people (even Republicans) know what "GOP" means.

My view is that by now GOP is now just a string of initials, not an acronym that anyone "reads". Like IBM or ATM, you just see the initials and don't think "International Business Machines" or "Automated Teller Machine".

14. GOP keeps some people from blaming Republicans.
Some people don't know what GOP means, so the media use it to hide Republicans from blame. Those are the swing voters. The ones who decide elections.
