Ashcroft and "No commercial Planes " Statement

I saw some right wing bigot on CSPAN this morning- Beyer, a radio host.

Caller:Mr. Beyer explain to me why Ashcroft and others were told they should avoid commericaial aircraft before 911

Beyer: I have never heard anything like that. Whenever someone tells me some wild thing that they probably got off the internet I tell them to name me the source,

Yhis is nothing but Democrats making up things

Does anyone have the source?

Ashcroft Flying High
WASHINGTON, July 26, 2001

Fishing rod in hand, Attorney General John Ashcroft left on a weekend trip to Missouri Thursday afternoon aboard a chartered government jet, reports CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart.

In response to inquiries from CBS News over why Ashcroft was traveling exclusively by leased jet aircraft instead of commercial airlines, the Justice Department cited what it called a "threat assessment" by the FBI, and said Ashcroft has been advised to travel only by private jet for the remainder of his term.

"There was a threat assessment and there are guidelines. He is acting under the guidelines," an FBI spokesman said. Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department, however, would identify what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it.

A senior official at the CIA said he was unaware of specific threats against any Cabinet member, and Ashcroft himself, in a speech in California, seemed unsure of the nature of the threat.

"I don't do threat assessments myself and I rely on those whose responsibility it is in the law enforcement community, particularly the FBI. And I try to stay within the guidelines that they've suggested I should stay within for those purposes," Ashcroft said.

Asked if he knew anything about the threat or who might have made it, the attorney general replied, "Frankly, I don't. That's the answer."

Earlier this week, the Justice Department leased a NASA-owned G-3 Gulfstream for a 6-day trip to Western states. Such aircraft cost the government more than $1,600 an hour to fly. When asked whether Ashcroft was paying for any portion of the trips devoted to personal business, a Justice Department spokeswoman declined to respond.

All other Bush Cabinet appointees, with the exception of Interior and Energy with remote sites to oversee, fly commercial airliners. Janet Reno, Ashcroft's predecessor as attorney general, also routinely flew commercial. The secretaries of State and Defense traditionally travel with extra security on military planes.

The Justice Department insists that it wasn't Ashcroft who wanted to fly leased aircraft. That idea, they said, came strictly from Ashcroft's FBI security detail. The FBI had no further comment.

I think that Repubs really do hear the truth,they are just not capable of interpreting what they hear. They are " my mind is made up and don't confuse me with facts" idiots.

with the guy who was bragging to Bowyer about signing Bowyer's name on a bomb dropped in Iraq? Jerry and that guy had quite a chuckle.

It seems that the bomb was a cluster bomb and we know that it didn't get Saddam. How can anyone think this is funny? I wonder if some poor Iraqi kid lost their life from the bomb when it was dropped, or maybe by mistaking one of the unexploded bomblets for a ball?

I was sick at my stomach.

The Secrets of September 11
The White House is battling to keep a report on the terror attacks secret. Does the 2004 election have anything to do with it?

April 30 Even as White House political aides plot a 2004 campaign plan designed to capitalize on the emotions and issues raised by the September 11 terror attacks, administration officials are waging a behind-the-scenes battle to restrict public disclosure of key events relating to the attacks.

<snip>

Some sources who have read the still-secret congressional report say some sections would not play quite so neatly into White House plans. One portion deals extensively with the stream of U.S. intelligence-agency reports in the summer of 2001 suggesting that Al Qaeda was planning an upcoming attack against the United Statesand implicitly raises questions about how Bush and his top aides responded. One such CIA briefing, in July 2001, was particularly chilling and prophetic. It predicted that Osama bin Laden was about to launch a terrorist strike in the coming weeks, the congressional investigators found. The intelligence briefing went on to say: The attack will be spectacular and designed to inflict mass casualties against U.S. facilities or interests. Attack preparations have been made. Attack will occur with little or no warning.

The substance of that intelligence report was first disclosed at a public hearing last September by staff director Hill. But at the last minute, Hill was blocked from saying precisely who within the Bush White House got the briefing when CIA director Tenet classified the names of the recipients. (One source says the recipients of the briefing included Bush himself.) As a result, Hill was only able to say the briefing was given to senior government officials.

Summer Spinning
To GOP, Vacation Boosted Bush Agenda; To Democrats, Voters See a Shirk Ethic
Aug 29, <2001>

<snip>

The White House had announced that Bush would stay at his 1,600-acre ranch in Crawford from Aug. 4 through Labor Day on Sept. 3, a 31-day stretch that would have broken a modern record for a presidential vacation, held by Richard M. Nixon for a 30-day trip to San Clemente, Calif., in 1969. News reports played up the record, and a Gallup Poll found that 55 percent of respondents thought Bush's vacation was too long.

The length of the trip revived old questions about Bush's work ethic, and the poll and the news coverage caused consternation in the White House. Aides said they had planned an ambitious schedule for Bush as long ago as late June, but reporters were not told about it, even after they landed here. The White House, suddenly defensive, took every opportunity to show Bush on the go and even created a "Western White House" logo for the briefing room at Crawford Elementary School. Bush revealed that his ranch had new video conferencing equipment for keeping in touch with his national security team.

A Working Vacation
Vice President Cheney plans to fish, travel during month-long valley sojourn.
By Angus M. Thuermer Jr.

Vice President Dick Cheney took time off from his month-long working vacation Monday to outline his plans for August in Jackson Hole and to reflect on "an amazing year."

Cheney, who will live at his Teton Pines home about six miles west of Jackson until Labor Day, defended his energy policy, supported a local decision to limit drilling around the Gros Ventre Wilderness, recalled a life of service in Washington and said his health problems are not affecting his ability to fish for trout on his favorite Western waters.

Ashcroft Flying High is the smoking gun as far as I'm concerned and I've been saying it for two years. So have other people. Mike Niendorff for one. The fact that they all split town when they knew an attack was about to come down is CLEAR evidence, IMO. Combine that with PNAC's desire for a "new Pearl Harbor" and we have everything but the DNA test.

16. and later when he was asked about it
he walked out of his office.

July 26, 2001: CBS News reports that Attorney General Ashcroft has stopped flying commercial airlines due to a threat assessment, but "neither the FBI nor the Justice Department ... would identify (to CBS) what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it." (CBS, 7/26/01) "Ashcroft demonstrated an amazing lack of curiosity when asked if he knew anything about the threat. 'Frankly, I don't,' he told reporters." (San Francisco Chronicle, 6/3/02) It is later reported that he stopped flying in July based on threat assessments made on May 8 and June 19. In May 2002 its claimed the threat assessment had nothing to do with al-Qaeda, but Ashcroft walked out of his office rather than answer questions about it. (AP, 5/16/02) The San Francisco Chronicle concludes, "The FBI obviously knew something was in the wind ... The FBI did advise Ashcroft to stay off commercial aircraft. The rest of us just had to take our chances." (San Francisco Chronicle, 6/3/02) CBS's Dan Rather later says of this warning: "Why wasn't it shared with the public at large?" (Washington Post, 5/27/02)

But Iraq was weaker and made a better target!

Also the fact that Saddam was a sponsor of terrorism. He needs to check his sources. Saddam supported anti-Israeli terrorism. So Saddam supporting anti-Israel terrorism is justification enough for the pre-emptive expenditure of American wealth and lives.

Clarke is selling books! Now there is a critique by Bowyer who is pumping his book!

Bowyer is an interesting guy. Reminds me of a spook I know. He tried to say we didn't give Saddam weapons of mass destruction, we only failed to stop him from getting components (like anthrax) from us.

RE: Ashcroft not flying commercial just before 9/11,

Here's the story from CBS News from July 26, 2001 posted at 21:53:20 EST.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2001/07/26/national/main303601.shtml

<Snip>

Here's another source or two.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/september11/story/0,11209,719231,00.html

<Snip>

On September 10 last year, the last day of what is now seen as a bygone age of innocence, Mr Ashcroft sent a request for budget increases to the White House. It covered 68 programmes, none of them related to counter-terrorism.

He also sent a memorandum to his heads of departments, stating his seven priorities. Counter-terrorism was not on the list. He turned down an FBI request for hundreds more agents to be assigned to tracking terrorist threats.

Nevertheless, he began using a chartered private jet to travel around the country, rather than take commercial airliners as Ms Reno had done. A justice department spokesman said this was done as a result of an FBI "threat assessment" on Mr Ashcroft, but insisted that the assessment was not specifically linked to al-Qaida.

But Mr Ashcroft stopped using commercial flights in July, just as the intelligence "chatter" about a possible al-Qaida strike on US soil was getting louder.

According to yesterday's edition of Newsweek, he had a showdown on counter-terrorism with the outgoing FBI director, Louis Freeh, in the spring of last year in Quantico, Virginia, at an annual meeting of special agents.

People at the meeting said the two disagreed fundamentally on their priorities.

Mr Ashcroft's agenda comprised "basically violent crime and drugs" and when Mr Freeh began to talk about his concern about the terrorist threat facing the country, "Ashcroft didn't want to hear about it".
<Snip>

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/gate/archive/2002/06/03/hsorensen.DTL

<Snip>

Ashcroft used to fly commercial, just as Janet Reno did. So why, two months before Sept. 11, did he start taking chartered government planes?

CBS News correspondent Jim Stewart asked the Justice Department.

Because of a "threat assessment" by the FBI, he was told. But "neither the FBI nor the Justice Department ... would identify what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it," CBS News reported.

The FBI did advise Ashcroft to stay off commercial aircraft. The rest of us just had to take our chances.

The FBI obviously knew something was in the wind. Why else would it have Ashcroft use a $1,600-plus per hour G-3 Gulfstream when he could have flown commercial, as he always did before, for a fraction of the cost?
<Snip>

And then there's this warning to San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown mere 8 hours before the attack.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2001/09/12/MN229389.DTL

<Begin>

For Mayor Willie Brown, the first signs that something was amiss came late Monday when he got a call from what he described as his airport security - - a full eight hours before yesterday's string of terrorist attacks -- advising him that Americans should be cautious about their air travel.

The mayor, who was booked to fly to New York yesterday morning from San Francisco International Airport, said the call "didn't come in any alarming fashion, which is why I'm hesitant to make an alarming statement."

In fact, at the time, he didn't pay it much mind.

"It was not an abnormal call. I'm always concerned if my flight is going to be on time, and they always alert me when I ought to be careful."

Exactly where the call came from is a bit of a mystery. The mayor would say only that it came from "my security people at the airport."

Mike McCarron, assistant deputy director at SFO, said the Federal Aviation Administration "routinely" issues security notices about possible threats. He said two or three such notices have been received in the past couple of months,

but none in recent days.
<Snip>

Of course you'll probably just shrug this off as 'internet rumors' after all, who are Willie Brown, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Guardian and CBS News anyway!

You also say we didn't give Saddam WMD's? Just 'pre cursors'? Boy you don't seem to know the truth do you? I'll dig you up the Congressional testimony regarding the anthrax, botulin toxin, and a whole slew of other bio weapons materials that Bush Sr. gave Saddam when he was our 'friend' fighting against Iran as well as the list of American companies that supplied the equipment to manufacture them.

What flavor is that Kool-Aid anyway? :)

I informed him that I had listened in shock to his flat out twisting of what I am sure he knows to be the truth. I referred him to numerous sources.

I also let him know that I am an every morning listener to CSPAN and that I would stay on my telephone every day until I am able to let the CSPAN viewers know that he "strayed from the truth" on Friday,March 26th 2004 at approximately 6:02 PST.

I told him that I was so upset that innocent people were listening to his smooth lies. I informed him that I wanted to alert the other stations to be aware of this issue when and if they select him to be "fair and balanced" with their viewers.

I cc'd my email to the CBS,Faux,NBC and CNN and CSPAN

36. here's the info....
http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/timeline/main/timelinebefore911.html

July 26, 2001: CBS News reports that Attorney General Ashcroft has stopped flying commercial airlines due to a threat assessment, but "neither the FBI nor the Justice Department ... would identify what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it." FTW "Ashcroft demonstrated an amazing lack of curiosity when asked if he knew anything about the threat. 'Frankly, I don't,' he told reporters." It is later reported that he stopped flying in July based on threat assessments made on May 8 and June 19. In May 2002 its claimed the threat assessment had nothing to do with al-Qaeda, but Ashcroft walked out of his office rather than answer questions about it. The San Francisco Chronicle concludes, "The FBI obviously knew something was in the wind ... The FBI did advise Ashcroft to stay off commercial aircraft. The rest of us just had to take our chances." CBS's Dan Rather later says of this warning: "Why wasn't it shared with the public at large?"

38. It could be more fruiful to email the 9-11 Commission to request...
... that Ashcroft be questioned about his flight habits at the next scheduled set of hearings, on April 13th-14th.
Given its title, "Law Enforcement and the Intelligence Community. Washington, DC, April 13-14, 2004" your questions belong on the agenda, and the Commission won't release its witness list until about April 3rd, according to http://www.9-11commission.gov/hearings/index.htm :

"The following represents the remainder of the Commissions 2004 investigative hearing schedule:

March 23-24, 2004 Counterterrorism Policy Washington, DC

April 13-14, 2004 Law Enforcement and the Intelligence Community Washington, DC

May 18-19, 2004 Emergency Response New York City The 9-11 Plot New York City

June 8-9, 2004 National Crisis Management Washington, DC

Additional information, including times, locations, and panels, will be disseminated approximately ten days prior to each hearing. Such information will also be available on the Commissions website--www.9-11commission.gov. Hearing dates and topics are subject to change at any time.

AL FELZENBERG, DEPUTY FOR COMMUNICATIONS National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States

Office: 202-401-1725 Cell: 202-236-4878 Fax: 202-296-5545"

afelzenberg@9-11commission.gov

Accusations about Ashcroft's shifts in FBI priorities away from counterterrorism belong on the agenda too. See http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x1276543

There is documentary evidence that counterterrorism was Janet Reno's #1 priority, but it didn't make Ashcroft's top 7. Also, Ashcroft should be asked how many Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrants he approved BEFORE 9-11. The secret court's report to Congross only gives the total for the year 2001, including warrants approved AFTER 9-11. Under Clinton, apparently hundreds of these warrants were issued at a steady pace.
