I refuse to go to Amazon because I KNOW they contribute to the Rethuglicans....

I need to get a gift certificate for my 13 yr old niece (books, clothes, or jewelry).

10. Costco is online
http://www.costco.com/

And they are employee and liberal friendly. When the notice went out in the paper that Costco employees contributed to Democrats, the freepers set up a hate mail campaign deluging them with hate mail. Costco said sorry you are unhappy to them but we will continue treating our employees well and support the party that reflects our beliefs.

11. The weird thing is that Costco is doing what Henry Ford started, and Ford
was NO liberal (in fact, he was a fascist).

Even Ford realized that if you want a public that needed your products, you had to pay them well enough so that they could live in suburbs, have places to drive to, and could afford to buy them.

Costco's model is all about having a wealthy middle class that can afford to buy consumer products and has the free time to do some price comparison.

They also serve small businesses, and allow them to be more competitive by giving them access to price compeition which, generally, only big businesses can afford. And trust me, small business competitiveness is nothing Republicans want to see.

14. now that you mention it
>>> From Who Financed Hitler: The Secret Funding of Hitler's Rise to Power 1919-1933 by James Pool and Suzanne Pool (The Dial Press, 1978), pp 111, 129:

"That Henry Ford, the famous automobile manufacturer gave money to the National Socialists directly or indirectly has never been disputed," said Konrad Heiden, one of the first biographers of Hitler.<87> Novelist Upton Sinclair wrote in The Flivver King, a book about Ford, that the Nazis got forty-thousand dollars from Ford to reprint anti-Jewish pamphlets in German translations, and that an additional $300,00 was later sent to Hitler through a grandson of the ex-Kaiser who acted as an intermediary.<88> The US Ambassador to Germany, William E. Dodd, said in an interview that "certain American industrialists had a great deal to do with bringing fascist regimes into being in both Germany and Italy."<89> At the time of Dodd's criticisms, the general public was aware that he was speaking of Ford because the press made a direct association between Dodd's statements and other reports of Ford's anti-Semitism.

....

Henry Ford's reward from Hitler finally came in July 1938, when on his seventy-fifth birthday he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Supreme Order of the German Eagle. Ford was the first American and the fourth person in the world to receive this medal, which was the highest decoration that could be given to any non-German citizen. Benito Mussolini, another of Hitler's financiers, had been decorated with the same honor earlier that year.<128>

interjection can you just see mr. prescott bush turning green with jealousy?

The presentation was made in Ford's Dearborn office by the German Counsul on Cleveland, Karl Kapp, and Consul Fritz Hailer of Detroit. Kapp placed the silk red sash over Ford's right shoulder. The sash was worn in a diagonal line from the right shoulder to the left hip where it was clasped with a gold and white cross. Kapp then pinned a large, shining star-shaped medal of Ford's white suit. The decoration was given "in recognition of pioneering in making motor cars available for the masses." Hitler's personal congratulatory message accompanied the award.<129>

7. You have bad info.
This cycle, Amazon's PAC gives more to Dems than Republicans (57:43) which is pretty good for a corporation, and they don't even give that much to federal candidates. They've given 26K so far this year, which is more than they've ever given.

http://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/pacgot.asp?strID=C00360354&Cycle=2004

Amazon has only EVER given soft money to Democrats (5K)

http://www.opensecrets.org/softmoney/softcomp1.asp?txtName=Amazon

They only have one lobbyist, and he's never given any money to anyone while being Amazon's lobbyist.

http://www.opensecrets.org/lobbyists/firm.asp?ID=99139&year=2000

And if you look at individual donations by employees of Amazon, their own PAC (which isn't that big) gets the biggest donations, followed by Emily's list, and then it looks like Dean, Nader, and Cantwell were popular recipients in the last three cycles. There are only a few donations to Bush.

8. Furthermore, Amazon's business model is very "democratic":
Edited on Sat Mar-27-04 12:11 PM by AP
they aren't tied to a single producer, or group of producers -- ie, they're not a vertical monopoly, like the cable companies who want to control both what is produced and what is distributed, and then control of the means of distribution as well, which is extremely uncompetitive and, therefore, wealth constrictive, rather than wealth-producing.

And they're all about price competition, and they're interested in giving consumers what they want, and not what corporations want you to want.

Their business model is very much in line with Democratic principles, and I think that all the big providers of conent would love to OWN Amazon so that they could control what people wanted and what people bought -- so that they could have the vertical monopoly.

16. NO WAIT! Try this site ! (Especially if you're a Clarkie or Deanie.
http://www.northshire.com/siteinfo/searchresults.asp

or just check out northshire.com

You cant take a chance on Amazon! I also heard Amazon donates a lot to Republicans to cover their own ass. Northshire Bookstore is a privately owned beautiful big store. The best in Vermont. The owners are DEMOCRATS.

They personally donated $1000 to Howard Dean and no one else. I asked Mrs. Morrow (owner)if I could get signatures for a WES CLARK petition from their customers. She said it was against company policy...but that I could ask her...I did...and she signed and wished WES luck. Made my day!

REMEMBER last winter/year when "The Poets" were suppose to have an audience with Laura Bush to do a reading? She canceled their invitation at the last minute for fear they might make some anti-war comment etc. Since Laura didn't want then...who do you think invited them to their store to fill that time slot. Northshire Bookstore!
The major news media even reported it. They have all kinds of Democrats and book signings at their store.

Alexander Sander and Planned Parenthood will be there in person this Sunday. These people (not some big corporation)deserve our business.

Check out their site...they have all kinds of gifts. They are lovely people and REAL DEMOCRATS and deserve your business....since you asked.

21. Although I always recommend buying locally, my feeling is that...
...Amazon can actually have a broad influence on the economy, and can force price competion across a broad range of marketplaces.

20. Borders's employees were on strike, and Amazon runs
Borders's web site, so we were punishing Amazon as well (which I didn't understand).
