Has anyone read the April 2004 edition of Harper's magazine? (I have the hardcopy - I don't think the articles are available online??)

They have a short article in their "Briefings" section on page 83 called "Welcome to the Machine: A citizen's guide to hacking the 2004 election". It is a basically a primer on how to hack an election and the main premise of the article can be summed up in this sentence:

"For those who hope to salvage the integrity of this year's election, then, energies must shift from the effort to stop vote-hacking -- now a doomed task, it would appear -- to the effort, instead, to ensure that access to vote-hacking will be as open and democratic as possible."

It actually would make a pretty good idea for a protest. If the electronic voting companies are going to turn the vote into a farce by not taking the security issues seriously, then maybe people should go out of their way to make it as much of an obvious farce as possible. People could put up posters all over the counties that use these machines with instructions on how to hack the machines, etc. Not sure about the legalities of this but it sure would be interesting to see the reaction. Maybe then people would start to pay attention. Or, if not, at least it would be an equal opportunity disaster!
