Musharaff trying to help Bush win election?
"Game Over The Washington Post reports that amid widening political fallout, the Pakistani government has declared victory and ended a 12-day campaign without capturing any "high-value targets." The article cites a Pakistani columnist who calls the operation an effort to pull off a "dazzling achievement" and help re-elect President Bush "irrespective of the price our citizens have to pay." 2. He's being pressured to do so by the Bush administration...
...but he's also kind of busy, vis a vis getting shot at, impending civil war, and paranoia over what I.S.I might be up to, not to mention the whole India/Kashmir thing. Yes, the life of a military dictator is a rigorous one. But, Pervez is just doing the best that he can at the moment.

He can't afford to let too many US troops in the country, especially the tribal areas, since then he might not only have to worry about armed insurrection spreading, but also getting a shiv in the back from some I.S.I zealot due to 'over-cooperating' with the US. So he made a show of it to get the Americans off of his back.

At least that's my read of it.

And from here, it looks like he got the better end of the deal.

3. Musharraf is longtime BFEE.
When the elected Pakistani president was cooperating with Clinton to go after Bin Laden, he was overthrown by Musharraf who promptly cancelled the joint operation.

Bush was quoted during the 2000 campaign as saying he was a "good man" who would bring stabilty to the region. HUH? Musharraf had pulled off a coup against the democratically elected president and then cancels joint operations with the US to go after Bin Laden. Bush thought that was a good thing?

Sure it was, if your interest was in Bin Laden's survival so you could use him to foster a climate for a religion-based world war that further lined the pockets of your family and cronies.
