Is the news media like the WWF?
Or, WWE, I guess it is now?

I noticed that week to week the "momentum" of each candidate seems to shift back and forth. Three weeks ago, Kerry was beating up on Bush...then Kerry "made some gaffes" and Bush got the momentum back...then it was the Clarke slams of Bush, last week...and now this week the polls are "showing" that Bush's approval has still gone up.

Is this being choreographed? Is the media trying to keep a close, dramatic race to keep people interested, keep their ratings up? It's all so dramatic with the constant back and forth. It almost seems scripted, like a professional wrestling match.

1. No... the WWF isn't as predictable or fake as network news.

Look at the message boards here. Anybody that pays the least bit of attention know what will be coming out of the mouths of the talking heads no matter what events actually happen.

The WWF still manages to spring a surprise or two at the big pay-per-views occasionally.

If nothing else, a lot of the WWF wrestlers are good athletes and put on a good show for the fans. It's far from entertaining watching the corporate media distort and lie every day.

2. I've been itching
to bring up the debordian "society of the spectacle". i think we're at it's zenith, and reality TV is an example. Reality TV is pure spectacle, in that it is "reality" that is manufactured in order to undermine or replace lived Reality. Media coverage of politics is no exception. We're to watch the Bushies jab Kerry like Simon jabs some atonal hack, or we're to see them as two people battling it out on survivor. The media perpetuates the spectacle because the spectacle is the reality to which we've grown accustomed. Phew...i feel better now.

3. Yeah...it's politics as entertainment.
That's messed up. We're talking about our lives, here, our government, and we're turning our leaders into celebrities. We're turning our own lives INTO a reality show. Sick and twisted.

4. no, some people find wrestling enjoyable
the murkan news media are like being forced to go to pep rallies in high school, except they are pep rallies for the wrong team.
