Clarke's book reads like a script: The Pending Fall of the House of Bush

Fatal Error

Richard Clarke, Washington's director of counter-terrorism for many years, has delivered a devastating condemnation of the Bush administration with his sensational revelations.

The whole affair reads like a script for a catastrophic film in the best Hollywood tradition: The White House is in panic and a heavily armed Secret Service team quickly whisks Vice President Richard Cheney to a nuclear bunker and command post underneath the White House; its principal tenant, George W. Bush, jets through the skies above the Midwest in his enormous Air Force One, searching for a safe place to land.

The entire capital seems to be on the run. Government departments, offices and official agencies are cleared, and emergency response centers are activated throughout the country. In the center of the eye of the hurricane, in the White House situation room, a room bristling with monitors, Richard Clarke, a hero and the President's special counter-terrorism advisor, takes control of the situation. On September 11, 2001, as soon as the scope of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington becomes apparent, his boss, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, does not hesitate to place him in charge of managing the crisis.

Clarke's recollections, which read much like a script, also contain the elements of a drama. Its working title? The Pending Fall of the House of Bush.

1. And karl rove gives credence to the
DEVASTATING CONDEMNATION by doing what karl does best - character assasination. Yes, karl, you political genious, every time you send out a minion to trash Mr Clarke just reinforces the facts you fear. It must really suck living a life of lies and deceit and dishonesty and hate and greed and no integrity and no moral character. In other words, it must really suck being a republican.

Let's ignore the "level-headed leader" bit, and the "unheard-of accusations" (um, you don't hear when you're not listening??) ... not a bad article. Der Spiegel usually runs quite a few interesting articles, often much less partisan than what we get here. I'm going to go check out the original and see if it 'feels' the same in tone as this one.

On edit: unheard-of can also be translated as just 'unheard'. Interesting. Also, interesting to note that NYTimes and Der Spiegel are doing a twice weekly exchange! Cool!
