What percentage did Clarke tithe to the 911 families?
Does anyone recall what amount of his 911 book sales was going to go to the 911 families?

1. Welcome to DU
He stated on Meet the Press, I think, that he was going to donate quite a bit but hadn't decided on how much. Some to dead soldiers' families, too. One of the issues is that he's being threatened with "you'll never make another nickle in this town," so he needs to plan for his own future accordingly.

Welcome to DU.

I know I could live the rest of my life quite comfortably with 750k.

I hope he does the same and gives the rest to charity.

31. anyone who profits off 9-11?
Zebrea 33 do you include the GOP? Haliburton? Cheney? Bush? All the other people who wrote books about it?

This is not exactly a case where the criminal writes a book about the crime and profits. Clarke did nothing wrong.

I also don't get why all the attention. Clarke hasn't said one thing that tons of other people have said before, including Bush himself (on how urgent terrorism was in the WH before 9-11)

34. Then, fer sure, you are castigating the Pretzledent for SELLING
his picture of himself on AF1 as he ran around the country hiding while Richard Clarke had to totally run the whole country in the situation room!!

Was it $500 or $1000 for an autographed picture of the 9/11 "hero," our brave President in charge of the nation?

You do agree, don't you, that the Republican Party should give back all that money?

43. Tell that to Mr. George Bush
Who sold photos of himself on 9/11 in order to raise money for his reelection.

Tell that to every street vendor who sold a T-Shirt, every business that put out a commemorative coin, or album, or documentary: How much does Blockbuster video contribute for each rental of 9/11 In Memoriam? How much has Toby Keith contributed?

Let's go further. Senate majority leader Bill Frist contributed to the victims of the Anthrax attacks from the profits of his book "When Every Moment Counts: What You Need to Know About Bioterrorism From the Senate's Only Doctor"? How about every conservative commentator that written a book connected to 9/11? How much have they contributed?

Let's be outraged. Indeed. Let's be. But let's not be selective. let's be outraged over the principle, rather than over the party involved.

74. Does that include your *fearless leader?
Let's look at the BIG PROFITEERS first. You know, the ones making MEGA-BUCKS off this "little misunderstanding" of WMDs that don't seem to be under the desk... No, not there. You know, the ones who had such access to info they mighta coulda decided to IGNORE some that didn't fit into their "portfolio???"

Some-of-your-fucking-business-percent is more about if your aging parents can get the medications they need and your kids are covered through you, if you can survive financially focusing on the welfare mother rather than corporate welfare (the disparity BOGGLES THE MIND) as the means of production are STRIPPED from your hands and awarded to the lowball outsourcing bid. Is your air clean? Your water and food supply safe? Your earth in balance? Mother Earth is NOT in "balance" as we have known her if you are paying any attention at all. "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."

Rather then getting exercised about the proceeds from a book... (Hmmm... Where IS that link to the pictures of *crusader bunnypants as he hopped across the continent to be "out of harm's way. They were hawking that *shit like mad. Wonder how much *THEY made. WHERDY GO?")
perhaps you might read a time or two and carefully consider its content. Can we start there, boys and girls? I knew we could. ;-)

82. 911?
First of all, Richard Clarke's book is not a book dealing with the 9/11 tragedy from the perspective of the victims and their families. It is a book that concentrates on the failures of the Bush administration before, during and after 9/11. Specifically, it deals with terrorism. Mr. Clarke is an expert in counter-terrorism. Who else should write such a book and why is it immoral for them to profit from said book? Again, he's not writing about 9/11 from some hallowed victim's perspective, but from his own experiences as an expert in counter-terrorism. He also forcefully argues that Iraq was--and continues to be--the distracting force in the Bush Admin that prevents us from waging a more effective war on terrorism.

If Clarke's book wakes some Americans up to the fact that this Admin is taking our Country in the wrong direction, perhaps we may be able to prevent the next attack(s), or at least lessen the destruction. And you should remember, when the President was jumping from non-disclosed location to non-disclosed location during the attacks, Richard Clarke remained in the White House--even with the plane from Pennsylvania inbound. He's also the only person who worked in the White House to formally and publicly apologize to the 9/11 victims families. It is not a question of money, but of honor. Richard Clarke has more honor than every single person in the White House combined.

They were all posing as family members of tragedy victims anonymously on message boards when their cockatiel flew into the circuit breaker and the house burned down.

Oh, and give my regards to your zombie sister. First she dies on a raft and then her husband is killed in WTC 2.

Not of you...of the news folks to ask him. He has no obligation - moral or otherwise to donate procedes of his book to 9/11 families. That question was designed for one purpose and one purpose only. To portray him as an opportunist who is chasing money in lieu of the truth. This is what happens when they can't challenge someone on facts they resort to this stuff.

Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 08:06 PM by leftofthedial
it may help determine whether you like him or not, but it has no logical bearing on the truth of what he says.

why do you use the word "tithe" ?

A tithe is traditionally one-tenth. Would that satisfy you?

"Tithe" strongly implies a payment to support a religion. Are 9-11 families a religion?

His book is not merely exploiting 9-11; it is an attempt to identify honestly what went wrong. Our political process is incapable of telling us the truth, os the 9-11 families should thank Clarke for speaking out.

So far, he has given far more to 9-11 families than any member of the bushgang--his heartfelt apology.

Welcome to DU. I am truly sorry for your sister's loss. I hope we can stop those responsible before they do it again and we can fix our system so that we can protect our citizens from this kind of outrage in the future.

27. Probably about the same amount as Mel Gibson.
Only Gibson didn't have anything new to say.

73. Clarke wrote a book that exposed bush*
because of that he may never work in his chosen career. We should donate money to him.

28. Frankly, all he "owes" them is the truth..
Most of the 9/11 families have been paid plenty of cash.. I doubt seriously that ANY of them "needs" a money injection.. They want TRUTH.. He gave them all the facts that he had at his disposal..

This notion of "giving" part of one's book about any event, smacks of greed.. If a person who has had a horrendous crime committed against them, and they agree to help a writer write a book, that's different. They are entitled to a share then..

Clarke wrote about HIS story regarding the 9-11 incident.. He "owes" the families nothing more than that...and his testimony..

If he chooses to donate, that's HIS business.. He should not be pressured into donating...

Chris Matthews has made a lot of money off the 9-11 episode.. how much is HE donating?.. (His show was near cancellation, when it happened)..

Should newspapers be required to "donate" their proceeds post-9/11, since their income increased too..?

54. "tithe"?
I hope he didn't "tithe" any of it; that makes it seem like a religious obligation. Maybe he'll give some of it to them.

Can you tell me about the amount of money Guiliani gave to them from his book? Has Karen Hughes told us what percentage she is giving? I'll be interested in your answers. Thanks.

61. Uh, not to get technical, but tithe means one tenth. What is a 911
book and what is a 911 family?

63. First you thought Clarke was after Kerry's VP slot...

First you thought Clarke wrote his book because he is after Kerry's VP slot...

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=1314659

Then you found out that Clarke stated, under oath, that he would not accept any position in a Kerry administration.

Now you are claiming that Clarke wrote his book simply to make money.

Where are you going to move the goalpost to next?

Tombstoner started a thread asking if Clarke was credible. I told him I hope he doesn't get tombstoned. :)

69. I can't believe anybody would do that.
Complain about somebody "exploiting" 9-11 and then make up a story about their family member being a 9-11 victim for the sake of argument.

Truly a well deserved tombstone.
