Could this Deaner go for Gore?

I just read Al Gore's speech to MoveOn today. (http://www.moveon.org/gore-speech.html).

In that single speech, Al has articluated more clearly than any of the current candidates just what is wrong with the policies of the Bush administration and just how far short they fall of the American promise. But he went way beyond crtisizm of Bush. His message was infused with hope and optimism.

Last night I went to my second Dean Meetup, and he's still my guy. But I have to say, if Gore jumped into the race, something he reiterated again today that he is not going to do, I'd reconsider.

How many of you who currently support another candidate would become nuetral, or give Gore your support, if he got in the race?

And the country NEEDS him to clean up this mess. It's the patriotic thing for him, and us to do.

I was strongly for Gore before he withdrew, now i've invested time and money and developed a deep attachment to Howard Dean and I will continue to support Howard Dean. If Gore does get back in and gets the nomination I will enthusiastically support him. But my candidate no matter what will be Dr. Dean.

The text of his speech only shows what I have always known about him. I have endless respect for him and I don't even always agree with him.

if he were to run, but since he is not, he deserves to have us respect his reasons.

Gore still has a role to play in this. And I think that role will be to endorse Dean. But don't quote me on that one.

9. It Would be a Mistake for Gore to Rejoin the Race

Ross Perot and Gary Hart dropped out and re-entered and they lost massive amounts of their previous support. It would really hurt his image and his chances in the general election if he changed his mind.

But I would support him if he became a candidate.

and such terrible problems too, which one of our many great candidates to support. We already have an embarassment of riches with the people in the field compared to GWB, Gore is the cherry on top.

I love the Dean campaign, but I would probably go back to Gore.

The press HATES him. They branded him a liar, bland, insecure, prone to exaggeration, a whiner, etc. They will not change that tune, they can't change that tune 'cause that would mean they were wrong the first time. I thought Gore's speech was stunningly on the mark, the press will be unmoved (just watch how his speech gets trashed in the next few days). Sure, some Americans listen to the candidate, but most listen to the press, and the press has already passed judgememt.

Still stick with Dean.

I was ready to strongly support Gore again, but since he's dropped out, my attention has turned elsewhere. Dean is much more successful at the grassroots than Clinton/Gore were. I'm very excited to see what happens.

If Gore won the nomination, without doubt he would have my support...but my hope now is that he will endorse and campaign for Dean.

24. No Doubt

Edwards is a great orator. His looks great on TV, and he's pretty much in line with my views (although he really screwed up on the war vote, and he's ignored my communications with him about that local issue you know I care so much about.)And, he's got lots of money in the bank.

I'm sure he's going to do much better than he's currently polling. But on balance, I still prefer Dean over him. I do think Edwards would be a very good choice for VP. Hell, if he had been Gore's VP (recall, he was under consideration), we might have president Gore now. But who knows?

For what it's worth. I used to be worried about him giving up his senate seat, but now I think that maybe that will be okay if Erskin Bowles runs. I think Bowles could take it. But Edwards needs to make his intentions for his senate seat clear very, very soon if any dem is going to have a chance.

and yes, he pissed me off with his pro-war stance, but he just might still be proven right vis a vis the general electorate. And I'm certain his polling numbers will increase after his ads take hold.

On a side note, you know every time I watch SNL and they run the pre-show credits and show the actor's name: "Dean Edwards", I think, "Sounds like a good ticket to me, just backwards"!

17. Gore is NOT going to re-enter the race...

...this speech illustrates that he knows exactly what we are up against, and will do what's necessary to see Bush defeated. I think he believes that he's not part of the "public face" of that equation. This speech was to us, a call to arms, an encouragement to advance forward and know our enemy. Why else would he have issued this speech thru MoveOn? This guy clearly sees the bigger picture. I can't wait to see who he eventually endorses...

I'm kind of off Dean now for the retirement age thing. Not raising it(which I don't like either)but for saying he never said it. He did say it. He said it on MTP. He should have owned up to it in Chicago. I no longer trust him. And it saddens me.

Gore had his chance and blew it. I know people start these threads to say something nice about Al, but gee whiz, the guy is not someone to lead the Democratic Party or this nation.
All he had to do was say, to hell with the republicans and their drunken numbskull candidate. Why conceed to that A-hole Bush?
Friends, let's allow Gore to have his private life while we look for a leader and someone who will fight for all citizens, not just the already powerful. Gore lost when he should have had a near landslide.
