Order to remove 10 commandments delivered to all justices (AL)

August 07, 2003 - A federal judge Wednesday had a copy of an order that Chief Justice Roy Moore remove a Ten Commandments monument from the Alabama Judiciary Building delivered to all eight associate justices.

(MONTGOMERY, Ala.-AP) August 7 -

United States District Judge Myron Thompson said in his Tuesday order it was up to the state of Alabama to ensure that the monument is removed from the building if Moore fails to do so. The order was initially delivered to several state officials, including Governor Bob Riley and Attorney General Bill Pryor.

Moore's spokesperson Tom Parker said in a statement that Thompson is abusing his power by sending the order to state officials, who were not parties to the lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the monument.

Moore moved the monument into the building's rotunda in the middle of the night on July 31, 2001. Attorney Steve Glassroth, who filed the initial lawsuit against Moore, told a Birmingham radio audience Wednesday that Moore faces a possible fine of $5,000 a day if he defies Thompson's order.

Naturally the fines AND Judge Moore's legal expenses are being covered by the taxpayers of Alabama.

If Riley really wants to pass his tax plan, he should threaten to close down all the football programs in all public schools. :evilgrin: How the Southern Baptists would squeal then.
